" Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay makes no apologies for going for broke at Chelsea "
Monday 21st Oct 2013
After Samuel Eto’o put Chelsea ahead Cardiff refused to give in and pushed on leaving the hosts to capitalise on the space given.
Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay insisted he would make no apologies for chasing the game against Chelsea and conceding more goals.
The Bluebirds took the lead at Stamford Bridge thanks to Jordon Mutch, but eventually succumbed 4-1. After Samuel Eto’o put the Blues ahead Cardiff refused to give in and pushed on leaving the hosts to capitalise on the space given.
Mackay said it was the only way he knew how to go about his business.
“I’m not apologising for getting beat by four and not two.” said Mackay.
“At two we could have shut up shop and been beaten 2-1, but I am not having that. So there were going to be spaces left. Because we are trying to press and try and get the goal back. Kim had a strike for us. It was unfortunate. We had to get up and get on with it. There is no hard luck stories here. They are not allowed or anything like that.
“I never go anywhere thinking I might get beat.
“I knew how tough it would be here. Every week is tough in the Premier League.
“Every away game is tough in the Premier League. Every team you come up against you can be punished.
“We take every team on their merit, look at that team, study them, and go into with a game plan.
“I am really proud of my group against Chelsea. They were fantastic.”
Apart from Eden Hazard’s controversial equaliser for Chelsea the other big talking point of the clash was the dismissal of Jose Mourinho from the home dug-out after 70 minutes.
But Mackay insisted there had been no time wasting from his men and that during the game he’d had no problem with Mourinho.
“I never had any glances his way. You would need to ask him, but he certainly wasn’t unhappy with me,” said Mackay.
“I was too busy with my team, too involved, and asking for clarification from the fourth official from various things and that was for what was going on the pitch.
“It is quite clear in terms of time wasting, he puts four minutes up at the end of the game.
“They count 30 seconds for every sub, every goal, so there were quite a few goals and subs and a booking,
“And all that being the case that is about 3.30.
“So then there is 30 seconds of time wasting or extra play.
“I have been involved in games this season where there has been six or seven minutes of stoppage time.
“You do the maths. There certainly was nothing that went on.”
Mackay has had a difficult time at the club recently with his head of recruitment and good friend Ian Moody departing the club and revelations that majority-shareholder Vincent Tan has attempted in the past to have a say on team matters.
Mackay added: “I am calm and the leader of a great group of people.
“We have been building something here for two and a half years.
“It is three quarters done. I have great pride in the players and staff who work for me and things that are within my control are calmly dealt with.”
" Jose Mourinho "
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was left angry after being sent to the stands in the second half at Stamford Bridge.
Referee Anthony Taylor sent the Portuguese manager off after he complained and ran out of his technical area on 59 minutes because he believed Cardiff were guilty of too much time-wasting. Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall had actually been booked for lingering too long over a goal-kick at one point.
When Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic was told to hurry up when taking a throw-in by the referee Mourinho ranted at the official and was sent from his dug-out
Mourinho sent his assistant, first-team coach Steve Holland, out later to face any questions. Holland insisted the Chelsea bench from very early in the match had been angered by the way the Bluebirds were approaching the clash at Stamford Bridge.
“Jose is very frustrated about the time-wasting. From the first minute, they took a long time to take every dead ball,” said Holland.
“We mentioned it politely to the fourth official and referee. It was a deliberate ploy to break up the game and needed some action.
“It was 56 minutes before their goalkeeper finally received a caution. The game changed when we got ahead. They kicked the ball out for us to take a throw-in.
“The ball boy went to get it, threw the ball to Branislav Ivanovic, missed, and so it was in the dug-out area. Ivanovic had the ball in his hands for two seconds, and the referee was gesticulating for him to get it back into play.”
“Jose was furious on the touchlines. I think his frustration was totally justified. For an hour, we’d been frustrated by their clear time-wasting.”
“Supporters pay good money to watch a game of football and, from a few minutes in, their restarts were taking longer and longer.
“It’s very frustrating for Jose to then be sent off for protesting after we have to throw the ball in within two seconds of getting it.”

Mackay has become quite delusional.....the problem we had on Saturday was our glorious manager still selecting players who are not up to Premiership standard,Gunnerson springs to mind, also his use of substitutes left a lot to be desired, why was Noone not used?...........finally ask yourself this one question ......Mackay spent over 30 million pounds on transfers, and yet the bulk of Saturdays team was made up with Championship players as well as the bench being made up completely of Championship players....im sorry im with Tan on this one

Nothing wrong with the way he played it. he had every right to be livid about the equaliser then going 2-1 down malky wanted back what was rightly his, points at stamford bridge we were cheated and robbed.
we were good enough to hold on for a point at least and we would of without dirty Eto knicking the ball. then again thats probably how he was brought up in cameroon
obviously 1 on 1 we are going to take a hiding from chelsea's attack because defensively we dont have the pace or skill to match.
we would of re adjusted 2-2 to strong defensively

You complain that he uses players that aren't up to Premiership standard, then you call on him to use the likes of Noone...

quite right,
Angelis one thing 99% of you fickle fans (thats not all fans) just out of the fickle fans assuming you fall into realise attractive football does not make you a good player or suitable player
when medel come off we had a fantastic creative player come on we have in kim and we come unstuck. we could of had ashley young come on or even ronaldo, and still lost 4-1 because we were exposed by going forward.
the only way we can beat chelsea is by adding numbers to the back being disciplined and hoping for a break which we had. and then riding the storm of an onslaught.
We cant exploit technically better players with players who have diverse skill levels

Agree with what you say with the exception of Ashley Young, really he is absolute shite and even more shite when he puts on an England shirt.
