Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall apologises to team-mates after controversial Chelsea equaliser
20th Oct 2013

Chelsea 4 - 1 Cardiff City

Thew Scottish goalkeeper watched Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o steal the ball from him in the run up to Chelsea's equaliser.

Goalkeepr David Marshall accepted responsibility for Chelsea's controversial equaliser at Stamford Bridge, saying: “I'll have to change my ways.”

Cardiff City were a goal ahead thanks to a Jordon Mutch strike when Chelsea levelled thanks after Marshall was robbed of possession.

He had the ball and bounced it as he prepared to launch a long kick upfield. But Samuel Eto'o stole it, flicking out a foot and sparking a sudden scramble which was finished by Eden Hazard.

“The goal was probably down to me," said an honest Marshall pitchside at Stamford Bridge.

“It's a habit of mine to bounce the ball as I prepare to kick.

“The Chelsea player nipped in and knocked it away from me. I'm not sure of the rules, but it's probably my fault.. The ball wasn't in my hands at the time.

“It's a habit I will have to get out of. I saw him (Eto'o), I knew he was there. But force of habit made me do what I did.

“Things might have been different if we were leading 1-0 at half-time. Goals change games. Until then our game plan was working and we were frustrating Chelsea.

“The boys were fantastic and defended so well. It was difficult after losing what was a silly goal to concede.

“I apologised to the team at half-time.

“At 1-1, though, we were still in it and Petr Cech made a great save from Kim.

“It was a harsh scoreline and tough to take, but we will take heart from a good team performance and focus on Norwich City away next Saturday.”

Marshall, though, had plenty of support from within Cardiff's dressing room, boss Malky Mackay saying: “David has nothing to apologise for, He has been outstanding or us this season and at times has kept us in matches.”

Fair enough. Always respect a person who take responsibility.

Yep definately his fault he definately cost us the game and allowed them back in before half time, but everyone makes mistakes, time to put it to bed and move on, Norwich away will be a massive game. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Not his fault at all, look up the rules, clear as day. It was a mistake by the officials, end of.

Exactly Gwyn, and it's been documented on here on numerous threads since it happened.

By the letter of the Law we should have had a free kick there. However Marshall was a bit naive bouncing the ball with Eto'o so close by. Overall he had a bit of a stinker today but we can give him that one he has been top drawer this season and last :ayatollah:

It's not just the first goal. Marshall had a mare all game , the third went straight over him the fourth straight under , he should have saved them both !

He apologises for a bad game fair play to him move on to norwich when hopefully he won't be too busy and he can redeem himself and get back to the keeper we know he is . :ayatollah:

He's entitled to bounce the ball!!!

I thought the sheer power of the third beat him but the fourth was poor, and unlike him.

He was at fault for the loss today. First goal should never have been a goal in the first place, poor refereeing but still should have had the sense not to give Eto'o the chance. Second goal was pure class from Eto'o, no real fault there. Third goal should have been saved. Premier League keepers needs to keep them out (immense finish though), Fourth goal should have been saved. Weak goal to concede.

On another day we take points home, but sadly that wasn't to be the case. Lots of positives to take from the game and I still maintain Marshall has been one of our best players so far this season. His performance against Tottenham was one of the best I've ever seen from any keeper ever.

I was one of Marshall's biggest critics when he first joined us - I thought he was indecisive, clumsy and lacked confidence.

However, in the last year or two, he's upped his game something dramatic and is now a cracking all round keeper. Every keeper has an off day, and I think the first goal was harsh on him (not totally his fault IMO) but he could have done better with the third and fourth.

He'll bounce back without a doubt. Could be worse - look at Joe Hart!

I never ceases to amaze me when players say "I'm not sure of the rules".

Marshall, particularly as a goalkeeper should know all the rules, especially those that directly affect them! Now you could argue that it's up to the officials to know the rules and that's a fair point, but surely the players should have some idea of what they can and can't do during a game.

Very poor game for Marshall yesterday who was booked as well.

the fact of the matter is that he was instructed just the same as the rest of the team to waste time to frustrate Chelski, and it back fired.

Marshall wasnt to blame, MM has to carry the can for that

not just Chelsea but several reporters have stated the same, but then I suppose he was lucky to have been on the field after handing the ball outside the box, so its all justice in the end

Ooh reporters have said the same? Where are these reporters from is the question. London based I'd put my money on, I've never seen a report fair to us in London, have you with Swansea?

As regards to Marshall being sent off, it's been done to death. I think you'll find this topic interesting and will answer your Cardiff interest : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=125591

I suspect the other teams may well have someone up with Marshall now when he is preparing to kick since we now know its a habit.

I suspect that referees will be instructed to take more care in this situation and ensure attackers are properly punished when committing such offences.

Best goalkeeper I've seen in a CCFC shirt in the 37 years I've been a fan.

Head up high, Mr Marshall, because you are SUPERB.

He was always going to have a bad game at some point, wouldn't you rather it be a game like Chelsea away than an important winnable game like Noriwch next week!
