Irony about Dragon used on Cardiff City Crest

Sat Oct 19, 2013 11:00 am

The irony is that we now have fewer Welsh players playing for us now than for a long time. I happened to look at the programme for the opening game of this season v West Ham, and while West Ham had 3 Welsh players named in their squad, we had just one in Bellamy. 5 of our 6 defenders were English.

So different from the Sam Hammam days with a prominent bluebird on the badge. Almost half of the team were Welsh, and also playing in the Wales international side. The mood in both camps seemed to be unstoppably positive. The Millenium Stadium was sold out for Wales football games! And we only narrowly missed qualification. Now we can just about half-fill the CCS, and with Bellamy retiring, the next Wales international will likely not feature a single Cardiff player. And yet the dragon is prominent on our badge - does that make sense?

kind of, as we are capital of the country whose flag is predominately just a dragon? doesnt the actual city crest contain a dragon also?

Ok. So you're saying that you're happy with a situation where the Wales team, which once contained four or five Cardiff City players (then a team in the 3rd tier of the football league), and was extremely successful, now contains just one Cardiff City player - which as you point out, is the capital of Wales - despite the fact that Cardiff is now in the premiership?

NO I WAS SAYING IT MAKES SENSE KIND OF TO HAVE THE DRAGON IN OUR CREST AS IT IS QUITE OBVIOUSLY RELATABLE.

Ok, Declan John as well. Don't think he was on the team sheet v West Ham mentioned above. Like I say, with Bellamy retiring, John would become the only Cardiff player playing for Wales. Personally, I think that's shocking, and makes a mockery of the fact that the badge has the Welsh dragon as its prominent feature. Look at our development side - 90% Welsh players, so yes, would be good to get some of these players into our full side, but I personally think that over the last couple of years, the club should have made a lot more effort to sign some of the prominent Welsh players like Church etc.

why though, they're not good enough? absolutely pointless signing welsh born players when they're not up to the cut. ramsey is about the only current players of welsh origin that i think anyone would take back. the likes of gunter, gabbs and collins are not where we want to be aiming.

I think it's part of a mindset. It's whether you're able to believe they're good enough. The Cardiff players in the Welsh side about 10 years ago were good enough to take Wales to the brink of qualification. The people of Cardiff believed that both the Cardiff and Wales team at that time were good enough, and so filled out the Millennium Stadium. Look at successful Cardiff teams down the years, and they will always feature several Welsh internationals.

The Dragon should not be on our own crest. You don't see any of the English teams having the 3 lions on their tits.

We don't represent Wales we represent Cardiff and the Valleys.

This!

Although I feel that Cardiff represents just Cardiff... Others from further afar may wish to support, but the team itself represents Cardiff.

Agree in principle but a large amount of our support comes from the valley areas especially during the dungeon years where it was claimed more fans came from outside of Cardiff than within it, that is something I wouldn't disagree with. The more we can harness support in the valleys the better, Cardiff is becoming very middle class and a trendy place to live with people moving in from all over the place, typically not your match going football fan.

As for me having a nightmare here Chuckle, you t wat, I think you can get the gist of the post. It was something that just occurred to me on Saturday morning, and I put it up without thinking too much about the small details. I had just spotted the West Ham programme that is on display in the Andrew Buchan on Albany Road, and was struck by the absurdity of there being 3 Welsh players named on the sheet for West Ham and just one for Cardiff. I was actually at the game, but I'm afraid I'm not enough of a trainspotter to remember every single player change that occurs at every single game. I think the gist of the thread still applies, which is that there will likely only be 1 Cardiff player in the next Wales game (John), that this is still pretty poor, and hardly representative. Also agree with poster above re. the 3 Lions/England flag. It's hardly seen as obligatory that all English clubs must "represent" England in their badge, etc. It's just a sad cliche that people like Tan, who have no proper knowledge of the area or culture think, oh, Welsh, must use dragon.

Wonder if it's possible that this post inspired someone at Walesonline to write this "specially commissioned report"?

Sad really that Cardiff tops the list as the Premiership side with the most English players! Saying that, can't fault the commitment of the likes of Whitts, of course.

John would be the only Cardiff player when Bellers retires, the Welsh boys that we have signed recently could feature in the Wales senior team in the future. There is no need to worry which part of Wales each Wales player is from as long as they keep developing and get good results.
