I bet you most of those millions will all have sky or cable packages and mobile phone contracts. People need to prioritise their spending to ensure they stay warm. Granted there will be some who are really struggling but most just need to cut back on non essential spending. In the scheme of things these rises amount to £2 a week. Our food bills have gone up loads more than that but no body complains about the super markets.

Doesn't help when Wallace said we'll free prices for two years if they gain power so energy companies are hiking now to off set their loses if Labour gain power.

Yes cut out sky ect when done that what's next? As prices will rise even when there is no need to! its called greed and nobody as the balls to tackle the companies.

I'm no politician as everyone knows on here but having looked into prices what we pay and what other European countries pay then we are in mid table.

We have some of the cheapest power prices in Europe, so things aren't as bad as they could be.

Energy wise, it's a bit rich for the government now to whinge about buying abroad when the same tories sold anything British and made the UK totally dependant on other countries.

Today we saw on the news that joke Osbourne in China trying to get them to build us a power station. His argument was "where are we going to get the money from to do it ourselves". Well he could have used the moeny they picked up from selling off our own energy companies in the first place, rather gift it to his chums back in the 80's.

I can't beleive it's come to this where we have to go cap in hand to China to get them to build us a f*cking power station! Even if they did build it for us, we'd be even more under the grasp of yet another country who'll put prices up at will.

If he wants to build a power station then just build one and own it ourselves. Where's the money coming from? Well he could use the money he saved by not going to war with Syria. He can find Billions to stick our nose in to other countries wars, so now he's been stopped from going in to that one, he can use that.

To be honest i'm not really sure they are when you look at it. Wholesale energy costs have increased and the net profit they make on the bills is only a couple of % the rest is costs. The real factor to blame is the amount of TAX on it and the other factors affecting the wholesale costs.

How old are you all? Grown men moaning about not being able to put the heating on, how did they survive back in the days before central heating I wonder, when we had harsher winters too.If you are elderly you get a winter fuel allowance before someone calls me heartless. The rest of us can make do, it's character building for the kids. I don't put the heating on, we all put extra covers on, wear jumpers around the house. Got a lovely fireplace in the living room too which keeps us all warm in the evening.

If you want cheaper energy prices then support fracking but the same wishy washy, hippy, loony left wing are moaning about that as well.

damn right...who needs heating just because it's available. The people that die during the winter were probably going to die anyway. Wear more clothes....move more to generate your own body heat thus cutting down on heating costs and carbon footprints.

How did we survive back in the day? How did people reach 90 years old before the days of central heating? We have become reliant on it, we are becoming soft in this country. If you can't afford something then you have to find another way to keep warm, I knocked central heating on the head when the price started rocketing under Blair.

I will think you will find that the reason life expectancy was lower was mainly due to the higher infant mortality rates as well as not having the cure to certain illnesses, not dying from being cold.

Obviously if you are elderly or have a newborn in the house you are going to put the heating on. I want to go on holiday to Dubai every month and sit have hospitality down the City, I can't afford it so will have to make do with the Ninian stand and a wet weekend in Tenby.

I would beg to differ old boy.Firstly I never mentioned the tories let alone criticised them.Secondly and sadly many working people choose between the food that they eat and the amount of heating they use,again not political in anyway just an observation as a volunteer for citizens advice.I do admit to buying the daily mirror when I was in my twenties but only for the racing page as I agree the editorial was left of centre and as with all newspapers have their own political agendas.None more so than the daily mail which I admit I loathe with a passion, being in my view an undercover nazi rag.So you see I'm at a loss as to how you come to the conclusions that you have.One final question,who are THEY,as refered to in your last two sentances,the unemployed perhaps?You really ought to be a spokesperson for the BU as they could do with someone as talented making things up and coming to conclusions based on something that is not there in the first place.
