Harry Wilson’s surprise debut for Wales this week has won his granddad a cool £125,000 – after he tipped the youngster to play for Wales when he was just 18 months old.

Wilson, who is part of Liverpool’s academy set-up, became Wales’ youngest ever player when he got a run out against Belgium on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old earned the call up from Chris Coleman to play in the final two World Cup qualifiers after impressing in the Under-17 team, but there was double cause for celebration in the family.

Harry’s grandfather, 62-year-old Peter Edwards, had placed a £50 bet that his grandson would play for the senior Wales team one day – when he was just 18 months old.

The winnings had to wait a few days as Wilson was an unused substitute for the clash against Macedonia on Friday, but on Tuesday, he got a run out late on.

Wilson’s few minutes on the pitch, at the age of 16 years and 203 days, made the youngest ever Welsh player and means his granddad can retire early.

The electrical contractor, from Corwen, in north Wales, works away most of the year but can look forward to more nights in with his wife Dorothy.

‘She is over the moon. I retired immediately. I told my manager yesterday that if Harry plays I wouldn’t be coming back,’ he said.

‘I’ve retired one year early. I have come home now and will not be going back.

‘Not bad for a daft bet.’

good for him! :ayatollah:

If the lad is getting a call up at 16, he must be something special. injury hit squad or not! :ayatollah:

didn't look bad either!, didn't look out of place on a pitch against a belgium side with at least 14 champions league players! :ayatollah:

What were Belgium doing with 14 players on the pitch?

I love that picture, in set craig bellamy/wilson one star out one star in.

Similiar to the bale giggs scenario.
