Bristol City tops the list for football bans

By The Bristol Post
Saturday, October 12, 2013
BRISTOL City have the most unfriendly fans in England, according to new figures.

Last season, 34 troublemakers were banned from Ashton Gate and every other football stadium in the country – the highest of any club in the Football League or Premier League.

The pitch at Ashton Gate was invaded after Bristol City played Bristol Rovers earlier this season

This brings the total number of City fans who are subject to Football Banning Orders (FBOs) to 56.

Meanwhile, their arch rivals Bristol Rovers have 16 fans with FBOs as of September 20 and nine were issued by the courts last season, which was the joint 13th highest out of 92 teams.

The report released by the Home Office has also recorded how many people were arrested at grounds across the country in 2012/13.

Bristol City had 54 fans arrested, 42 of which were at away games and the vast majority were for public disorder.

Rovers had 25 arrests, seven at home and 18 away.

Brighton and Hove Albion has the “friendliest” fans. :D

Only 24 supporters of the Championship side were arrested last year and it was one of only three teams not to issue a banning order.

Newcastle United had the largest number of fan arrests last season – 175 – but Premier League champions Manchester United were a close second, with 145.

On a national level, there is a general downwards trend in football-related arrests.

As previously reported, Avon and Somerset police have issued 24 CCTV and photographic images of Rovers and City fans they suspect may have committed offences when the two clubs clashed in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round at Ashton Gate earlier this season.

Bristol City's figures will be distorted by their behaviour in the Great Western when they decided to beat up a defenceless table and chairs.

Loads have been banned from that incident and probably more to come.

Only just spotted this thread and no doubt there will be some funny smug responses below so shall see if I'm right in a minute. The reason why we're the friendlies fans is because we want all fans, Dads, Mums, children feel welcomed so they'll go away knowing they've had a nice family time in our beautiful ground and city and want to return which they do season after season.

Familys bring revenue to the club and City :malky:

SOCCER YOBS GO ON RAMPAGE!

Violence erupted on the streets as football fans clashed during the Albion v Cardiff match on Saturday 2001.

Hundreds of police had been drafted in because of fears of trouble.

Twelve fans, both Brighton and Cardiff supporters, were arrested during the Division Three game, which Brighton won 1-0.

The Station Hotel, in Hampstead Road, Brighton, was left with only one window intact after rival, ticketless, supporters clashed.

Landlord Derek Stott blamed a renegade band of Brighton fans for sparking the trouble which saw ashtrays, furniture, pool balls, cues and even a road sign hurled through his pub windows.

Fighting spilled on to the street as more than 15 thugs came to blows.

Mr Stott, 52, said: "I've seen trouble in pubs before, but nothing like this. They've wrecked the place. They've caused such a mess, I'll be closed for days."

Mr Stott had left the pub in the hands of his barman, Rob Semark, 28, and Mr Semark's girlfriend, Jennie Winson, 29, following the 3pm kick-off, believing once the fans were inside the ground it was safe.

He said: "Apparently all of a sudden the Brighton fans realised there were Welsh voices in the pub and the trouble started."

The bar staff took refuge and when Mr Stott returned he was confronted with the devastation.

He said: "The pub is about 80 years old and some of the original windows were still here, now there's only one left.

"I'm disappointed, very disappointed, especially with the Brighton fans, but you always have a bad element.

"We've had Brighton fans in here ever since they moved to Withdean and there has never been trouble."

Police had launched a full-scale security plan, Operation Seagull, with South Wales Police, British Transport Police and Brighton and Hove Albion FC after receiving intelligence that fans from Cardiff and Brighton were intent on causing trouble.

Hundreds of officers, some with dogs, were posted to Worthing and Brighton railway stations and arriving fans were herded to the Withdean stadium.

After the game, officers were drafted into the city centre and Worthing. Police vans lined Madeira Drive, Brighton.

More than 60 Cardiff City fans left Withdean and made their way to Worthing in the evening before breaking into groups and dispersing from the station.

A large group gathered in the Clifton Arms in Tarring Road, shortly after 7pm, where licensee Karen Ledger became concerned.

She said: "Some Cardiff City supporters came in and the police told me to be wary, but it was fine, no problem.

"Then I looked out of the window and saw riot police arriving. The Brighton fans were herded up the road by the police.

"I was not at all concerned, but I would have been if the Brighton lot had been allowed in as well."

Police hailed their operation a success with only a dozen fans arrested from a crowd of almost 7,000 at the match.

Superintendent Peter Coll, of Sussex Police, said: "I'm proud of all concerned in this operation as we had the potential to sustain significant damage and disorder.

"As a result of excellent intelligence and swift action, we were able to stop an outbreak of violence in Worthing town centre."

Albion Chief Executive Martin Perry said: "Unfortunately we have a very small group of so-called fans who attach themselves to the club who use a game as an excuse, but they are not true fans."

Re: 'BRISTOL C MOST ARRESTS & BRIGHTON FANS THE FRIENDLIEST

Sat Oct 12, 2013 10:37 pm

Four people were arrested following fighting outside Withdean Stadium before and after Albion's match against Cardiff last night.

The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was rearranged in an effort to minimise crowd disorder but there were still scuffles between rival supporters on surrounding roads.

The police hailed their operation a "complete success" in tackling what was potentially a far more violent confrontation.

Despite the presence of more than 50 officers, there was fighting around the stadium minutes before kick-off.

Anne Wilcox, 26, had just left work in Hollingbury and was driving home along Preston Road when her car was surrounded by hundreds of fans.

She said: "I had to slow down because there were people running into the road and fighting. Cars were swerving out of the way and huge gangs of supporters were being escorted by police.

"At one point these two men ran into the middle of the road and started fighting on the bonnet of my car.

"I beeped my horn and a police riot van moved in.

"It was very frightening. I was stuck for 15 minutes before police managed to move them on towards Withdean."

Sabeur Toumi, manager of the Preston Park Hotel, said: "We had a few problems with people fighting outside the hotel but fortunately the police moved in quickly and sorted it out."

Superintendent Peter Coll, in charge of the police operation, said "We were determined not to let some mindless hooligans ruin the excellent reputation we now enjoy for football policing in Brighton.

"We have worked really hard with the club in the last two years to plan out disorder and credit should be given to Brighton & Hove Albion for their responsible stance regarding football disorder."

I shouldn't have posted those quotes yesterday as this isn't the place for it so I'll apologize.

I've been three times to Ninain park and still have the mental scares from my last visit. The first time was great, drank in the Prince of Wales then another pub near the ground. Great day.

2nd time was a bit intimidating but was was expected as after all you are Cardiff City and you haven't got the reputation for being happy clappers.

3rd time, Nightmare.

2003-2004 I think the season after we beat you 1-0 at our place. Me and my mate traveled down on the train so we drank on train and taxied to the ground. Inside and eating my pie I glanced over at the Grandstand and nearly dropped my pie as the sights of lads staring and the abuse directed at us was venom at it's worst. I've been to hostile grounds but not on this scale and it was on that scale that I couldn't focus on the game but on how the f**k are we going to get to the station with that mob waiting outside.

89th Minute I was hoping for another hour injury time but the tw*t blew on 90. My mate never been to Ninian Park before so I didn't mention what to expect when we exit the ground as if I had then I don't think he'd have left the ground so I just we'll turn left out the ground and follow the crowd if we get split then we'll make contact when safe to do so.

We got split straight away outside and I'll put my hand up and say it was scary stuff outside and still can't believe I didn't get filled in and we finally met each other at Paddington Station. He asked me to do him a favor, sure, Don't ever ask me again to visit Cardiff and that was one thing I could guarantee without a doubt.

I'm under no illusion as to the size of Cardiff's firm and has been top for decades whereas Little old Brighton are mediocre compered to other firms. Brighton would never visit places like Cardiff and that's a fact and that's nothing to be ashamed of.

I remember that game. I had my 2 girls with me, one holding my hand who was about 10/11 and one on my shoulders who was about 4, my mate had his little boy too.

The Brighton fans were coming out of the gates and there were hundreds of Cardiff on either side trying to get to them, just as we were walking past- we had to run into the gardens to get out of the way !

Problem was , because of the layout at the old ground there was no safe direction for the Brighton fans to go. The police were trying hard to get control of it, but it was still pretty nasty.

Didn't really notice anyone getting hurt though near the ground, although getting back to the cars/station might have been dicey.

A season or 2 before a very big guy in his Brighton top with long blonde hair was walking out along the road with all the Cardiff fans, making himself as obvious as possible. Most people were just ignoring him, thinking he was just very stupid - although one guy kicked him up the arse if I remember correctly. As he was going past the houses opposite Jubilee park a couple of kids who could have been no more than 15 ran past me and caught him up.One of them gave him a clip across the ear - he must have jumped up to reach him , and the guy went down like a felled tree. The kids ran off and some old woman came over to help him screaming at all the other people walking past that they were bullies etc.. given that the guy really wasn't hurt the whole scene was a bit of a comedy. He got up fairly soon after a bit sorer and hopefully a little bit wiser.

In fairness these incidents have thankfully been pretty rare over the years.

I saw loads of people in colours previously, but doing their best to keep it low key. He really made no effort at all and stood out a mile. It sounds mean, but it was the closest I've ever seen to an innocent fan 'asking for it'.

Got lost at Wolves 20 years back as they had moved the away end years ago, and had my City scarf on. The walk around the stadium to get to the right end was hairy, really though we were dead. Didn't do that again.
