Season ticket holders say Newcastle stewards threatened them with bans for standing

Action from the game between Cardiff City and Newcastle which saw some fans warned they will be banned if they continue to stand
Cardiff City fans have been warned they face a five-match ban if they continue to stand during matches.

Season ticket holders with seats in Cardiff City Stadium’s Ninian Stand – near the away supporters’ section – told how during last weekend’s game against Newcastle stewards threatened them with bans if they did not sit down.

One anonymous supporter of nearly 45 years who contacted the Echo said the relationship between fans and stewards was “getting nasty” in that part of the ground, adding he believed the hard line stance was being adopted in preparation for the South Wales derby with Swansea on November 3.

But the Cardiff City Supporters’ Club said fans had been consistently warned about standing in the Ninian Stand over the past two seasons and have been offered the chance to relocate to the Canton Stand if they wished to stand.

The anonymous supporter, who has now written to the club outlining his concerns, told the Echo yesterday: “For the first three home games – Manchester City, Everton and Tottenham – the stewards appear to be fairly relaxed regarding people standing in their seats.

“There’s an area near the away supporters with approximately 1,000 people standing up. They haven’t really bothered to make us sit down.

“But on Saturday, against Newcastle, they really got shirty and heavy-handed, threatening people with five-match bans unless people sat down.

“I think they are pre-empting what’s coming against Swansea City. But the precedent was set – for the first three matches people were standing up and were being very passionate.”

In his letter to the club, the anonymous fan added: “It is getting nasty in this area whereas prior to the match, it was all very jovial and passionate – nothing more.”

But Vince Alm, of Cardiff City Supporters’ Club said Cardiff Council’s Safety Advisory Group had the power to reduce capacity at the stadium unless supporters sat down.

He said: “We are supporting the club in this instance. People have been given another area they can stand up in – it’s been risk-assessed – and that’s in the Canton Stand.

“They have been warned for two or three seasons not to stand in that area.

“If people continue to stand in that area, the capacity of the ground will be reduced by the Safety Advisory Group, by the council.

“If people do want to stand, there’s the Canton Stand where it is tolerated and they can stand for longer periods.”

Cardiff City stadium manager Wayne Nash told the Echo standing at the Cardiff City Stadium was not considered an inherent safety concern but was a major customer service issue.

He said: “We, as a club, are at the forefront of accommodating a singing section in areas where the majority want to predominantly stand, however, we cannot allow this in all areas and in the Ninian because we have to protect the majority and in particular some of our most cherished elderly fans, those who are unable to stand for long periods.”

Who ever made these rules needs to be shafted by a wooden stick, we need all the crowd behind the players this season to spur them on, but no the club would rather it being sit down shut up clap clap. Pathetic.

its an all seater stadium, the club had tried their best to get a section where standing is allowed, if people want to stand then thats where they should go.

So only the canton can stand? Surly it would be better to have two blocks in the Ninian that can stand too. :malky:

The most ideal situation would be swapping the canton with the family stand, but we all know the club wont do that. :(

they cant tell people to sit down and ban them if they dont if they've let them stand up for the 1st 3 games?

if they didnt want people to stand then they should of enforced it at the start of the season

The whole block should just stay standing right through the game. See what they do then

Believe it or not, we're only one of few clubs in this league who actually have a stand where everyone can stand.
Appreciate what we have because it might just get taken away

Newcastle stewards???

The views of Vince and Wayne Nash highlight the inconsistency in the clubs stance to standing in areas of the stadium. Vince is at pains to convince us it's a safety issue that must be adhered to, yet Wayne Nash States that it's more about customer care! It's clearly not a safety issue, otherwise there would be standing allowed nowhere within the ground. So if it's customer care then why not consult the customers in 116, 117, and 118 and get to the bottom of it and really find out what supporters want. If the majority want to stand then surely it's not beyond the club to find out how many and accommodate them in one area from the back down, so not obscuring anyone's view. Surely everyone would then be happy.

Let's have a bit of honesty here. A large part of the fans who stand, don't want to relocate to the canton because they will be too far away from the away fans.

doubt it very much

in reality there are only about 30 people who stand in 117 through the whole game, why should 30 people get priority over the rest? thats been proven by the way.

no club that im aware of has such a large standing section as Cardiff and they took the SAG, FA and the SGSA to school over it and spent a fair amount proving their point, to keep fans happy.

are the fans happy no they always want more cant be grateful, cant be appreciative of how far the club has gone for its fans

So where does that leave us with Tan standing up during the game?

Re: Cardiff City fans face five-match ban if they don't sit

All I would ask is why is not Mr Tan banned because he stands continually in the Directors' Box?

Does anyone think things could get nasty in there during the swansea game if they try to make people sit down?

Tan is standing at the back of the Directors box. He's not blocking anyones view and spoiling their enjoyment.

Why talk shite? 30 people? The entire section of 117 was standing throughout the whole of the Man City and Everton games. Around 70% around my row x stand and would be happy to stand throughout the game, as they want to keep an atmosphere going in that area. As I have said why not poll the Season Ticket holders in those areas to find out how everyone feels and then take it from there. You nor I know nothing about what other clubs have in place, so we can't speculate on how much standing occurs in other stadiums. I Also find it bizarre that some of our supporters brand those that want to stand near the away supporters as hooligans or potential hooligans, just because they actually want to create banter and therefore atmosphere. Personally It baffles me more, why old men or the in firm want to have their seat or season ticket next to the away section where the most raucous behaviour is the more likely to occur  however I do find that the Welsh in particular do love to have some conflict in their life to moan about

talk shite? ask the club been working in that area for years and trust me the regular problems are from the same 30 people week in week out, 117 will sit down rather happily when asked to except for these 30 people

I dont understand why standing has a direct effect to an atmosphere incapable of opening your mouth when you sit down?

why cant people sit where they want, sitting being the operative word

the club has done there research on this why should they go over it over and over again, do your own research

you want to stand go to the canton stand

well if you dont sorry to hear about that but ive seen a few things not an expert but I have an idea. Arsenal have a standing section its stuck right in the back of the lower tier right in the corner arguably one of the worst views you can get, their club dont care about them.

the club has tried its best to accommodate every type of fan in the ground they didnt have to but they did and all they get is a big f**k you we want more off some fans

Because it's the most competitive game we'll see this season? The first derby at stake? The chance to make a mark against our rivals who have been THE Welsh team for the past 3 years or so?

not arguing that but why does he think the swansea game be more of a problem than any other surely these guys who want to stand want to stand all the time not just against Swansea

why would things get nasty? are fans calling to attack stewards? is there a good chance of that happening? why has it happened already? why is it only likely to happen at the swans game?

mind you if these guys attack stewards great wont just get rid of you for 5 games the club will never see you again

Because its only just been brought up now, nobody said or did anything not just for the first 3 games but also for the previous seasons since we moved to the new stadium.

I just cant see anything being done anyway, just my opinion, i think its going to be rocking in there :ayatollah:

Exactly, we are setting the trend and making a bit of a stand, and our fans still not happy, there is a place designated for standing, don't think there are any other Premier clubs with one.

All well and good saying they stand on the Kop blah blah blah, if the club aren't seen t maintain the league rules and guidelines they are open to all sorts of problems.

how would it look if someone who was sitting had a standing fan fall on them and hurt them, the club could be totally open for punishment and costs.

People need to realise and consider other people's needs, not just what suits them, don't think our club could be more helpful to be honest.

yes and stewards are going to have to be on their A game to make sure that game goes without incident
