He is yet to start a Premier game, will claim starting spot

Jordon Mutch set to shed Cardiff City super-sub tag and claim starting spot against Chelsea
8th Oct 2013.

He is yet to start a Premier League game and found himself early on barely able to secure enough pitch time to make an impression.

Mutch has been outstanding in his last two substitute appearances and now appears ready to make his mark in the starting XI

If there is one man not welcoming the forthcoming international break then it must be Cardiff City’s Jordon Mutch.

The 21-year-old could not have done much more recently to force himself into the thoughts of Bluebirds manager Malky Mackay.

With a two week absence of club football now, Mutch can only hope that when the next Cardiff game does roll into view, a mouth-watering trip to Chelsea, that the message he has sent to his manager is still firmly at the forefront of Mackay’s thoughts.

From the moment Cardiff embarked on their first Premier League season in more than half a century, Mackay has naturally made a big point of outlining how important every member of his squad is going to be to him this term.

From the very start players who have been left disappointed as each starting XI has been announced have been assured that nothing is set in stone and that indeed every shirt is up for grabs.

But, in truth, it is never quite as easy as that. When you factor in the very good start the Bluebirds have made to their Premier League campaign it can prove difficult to sway a manager quite understandably loathe to fiddle with a side serving him so well on the pitch.

Mutch though, a £1m signing from Birmingham in June 2012, has, more than any other player at the club, made himself a serious contender to make the breakthrough.

He is yet to start a Premier League game and found himself early on barely able to secure enough pitch time to make an impression.

The opener at West Ham, the triumph over Manchester City, the battling draw at home to Everton and the draw at Hull saw him come off the bench in the 89th minute and against Tottenham he didn’t leave the bench at all.

It was in Cardiff’s Capital One Cup clashes that Mutch had to express himself playing both 90 minutes as the Bluebirds beat Accrington Stanley and then succumbed at West Ham.

But Mutch, who has one England under-21 cap to his name, stayed patient and hung on in there and his stock was about to rise in amazing fashion.

At Fulham he was called upon on 56 minutes with the game poised at 1-1 and the Bluebirds struggling slightly to make inroads in a clash they had dominated during the first-half.

Mutch give his side fresh impetus, but it was his spectacular goal in added time, when he fired into the top corner of the Fulham net from 25 yards with his weaker left foot, that really catapulted him into the headlines.

The strike was named Match of the Day goal of the month for September given the thumbs up by none other than John Hartson, a man not famed for his Cardiff City sympathies.

If events at Craven Cottage raised Mutch’s profile then last weekend’s clash at home to Newcastle firmly cemented the Derby-born midfield as the player most likely now to make the leap from Bluebirds bench to starting place.

Mackay’s men were awful in the first-half against the Magpies. They went in trailing 2-0 and it had not been for more heroics from goalkeeper David Marshall the deficit might have been a lot larger.

This time Mutch was brought on at the interval and once more he brought fresh energy and verve to the Bluebirds who improved as whole during the second period . It was Mutch who laid the ball out to Peter Odemwingie to half the deficit against Newcastle, and he played a big part in helping the home side look like they might actually get something from the game.

The match ended in defeat for Cardiff, but proved another big step on the road to the first team for Mutch himself. His manager, like most, has been left incredibly impressed by his midfielder’s form right now and gave his clearest indication yet Mutch is starting to figure in those first team plans.

“Jordon is a top young talent and still only 21-years-old,” said Mackay.

“He has loads of potential, there are so many facets to his game and he is improving all the time.

"He went on and took the Newcastle game by the scruff of the neck, absolutely showing why he is a part of our first team squad. He took his chance extremely well. Jordon made a big difference along with the rest of our players, put pressure on Newcastle and helped give us a chance.”

In the Bluebirds last two outings Mutch has come on to replace Kim Bo-Kyung and has supplied more urgency and better link-up play than the South Korean has managed of late.

But after the Newcastle game, during which a whole host of Cardiff players looked off colour, Mutch’s route into that starting XI has suddenly started to look even clearer. Mackay does now have plenty of time to weigh up his options with that eagerly-anticipated trip to Stamford Bridge due on Saturday, October 19.

Since his arrival in the Welsh capital Mutch has had to be patient, he’s had to bide his time. At first disrupted by a series of injuries, he made just 18 Championship starts as Cardiff surged to the second-tier title last term.

The majority of those came after he forced himself into the side regularly in the latter part of the club’s historic campaign.

Right now it looks as if the burly youngster might just be ready to push himself into the reckoning a lot earlier this time around.

Right from the minute Malky tried to sign Mutch, Malky has always believed Mutch would be in his first team and then shine in the Premier League, it was his foot injury that set him back, but Mutch is now fully fit and raring to go, will only get better  :ayatollah:

I don't know why but Mutch is a player I have never taken a shine to - I can't explain it rationally, but if Mutch loses possession or places a misplaced pass, I find it a far bigger crime than if Gunner does, or Kimbo or Whitts or anyone in fact.

Perhaps it's his size - he's a big man and he can appear a little lumbering to me.

No doubting he's a good player who deserves a starting spot next time - the whole team lacked confidence first half Saturday and when you have confidence it makes a huge positive difference to whatever you are doing, and that includes Premiership football.

Lets assume your right, and Mutch starts from the get-go,who will Mackay drop to accommodate Mutch?....the right move would be to drop Gunnerson, but Mackay being Mackay,he will properly drop Kim,which in my opinion would be a backward step
