Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan enlists support of Malaysian stars Jimmy Choo and Farin Ahman
7th Oct 2013

Cardiff City Owner Tan said: “I have invested a lot financially in the team and hope that the club will remain in the top flight of English football for a very long time.

“We do not have the financial muscle of Real Madrid or Man Utd, but we have spent a lot of money this season to buy new players and strengthen the team in every position.”

It might be the biggest game of the Premier League season and some might say the Bluebirds can do with all the support they can get against Manchester United but Vincent Tan has come up with a novel way of getting people in his home nation behind Malky Mackay's men.

What do the Malaysian actor, jeweller and shoe designer all have in common?
Apart from their global fame and the outstanding wealth that comes with their respective professions, they will all be supporting Cardiff City against Manchester United next month.

Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan has enlisted the great and the good of his home nation to back the boys in their biggest game of the season on Sunday, November 24.

Actor Farin Ahmad will be joined by shoe designer Jimmy Choo and Rafflesia pearl boss Winnie Sin in their support for Malky Mackay's men next month when they face the Red Devils in the Sunday Sky TV clash.

Thanks to a package put together by Tan and pearl giant Rafflesia , film megastar Ahmad, who boasts more than 1 million likes on his Facebook page , will watch the match in Malaysia with fellow stars Fizo Omar, Iqram Dinzly and Fizz Fairuz - and they will all be backing the Bluebirds.

Ahmad, a 34-year-old fan of Malaysian outfit Johor Darul Takzim, said: “I am happy that a Malaysian-owned team is going great guns in the Premier League.

Malaysian actor Farin Ahmad is presented with a Cardiff City shirt by Vincent Tan
“I am an Arsenal fan but I always look out for Cardiff’s results.

“I am very proud of the fact that the club is Malaysian and to be honest I have taken Cardiff as my second team in England.

“I can’t wait for the game, though United are struggling for form at the moment, they will still be a tough nut to crack.”

A report in the Malaysian Star confirms the arrangement, set up by Tan, saying: "In conjunction with the team’s biggest game of the season, the visit of Manchester United to the Cardiff City Stadium on November 24, Rafflesia this week announced a sponsorship deal with four celebrities to watch the match.

"The Welsh team, being Malaysian-owned, has grown in popularity with local fans and is expected to multiply even further over the course of the coming months."

As well as the foursome of actors, Tan handed over red shirts to shoe superstar Choo, Rafflesia director Winnie Sin and husband Sin Cheang Loong and Star Publications chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai at a glitzy event in Kuala Lumpur.

Mrs Sin said she was proud to be associated with Cardiff City, adding that being Malaysian-owned, the team had a special place in her heart.

“This a community-related project to give back to Malaysian football fans and to support the team. Seeing the word Malaysia on the team’s jersey makes me so happy,” she added.

“We will give the team our full backing and hope they do well this season. With the celebrities' loyal support we hope that more Malaysians will come out and back the team in the pursuit of success."

The Star also reports plans are afoot to form a Cardiff City supporters club in Malaysia, with a view to growing the number of local fans backing the team.

The idea being that fans will soon be able to gather at different venues across the country to watch matches and support the teamCi with a Malaysian flavour.

Owner Tan said: “I have invested a lot financially in the team and hope that the club will remain in the top flight of English football for a very long time.

“We do not have the financial muscle of Real Madrid or Man Utd, but we have spent a lot of money this season to buy new players and strengthen the team in every position.”

He added that Tourism Ministry have also contributed to promote the team in line with Visit Malaysia 2014.

“With the power of advertising and the huge popularity of the Premier League, the world now knows about Malaysia and I am absolutely delighted with the overwhelming show of support of the players, manager and the fans for the bright start that we have made in the league.”

So and English owner still makes you a Welsh club, but a Malaysian owner makes you a Malaysian club...

Great double standards by our friends from the West. :thumbright:

I think the difference is that they haven't had to completely change their identity to apparently appeal to a market in the far east on the whim of a foreign owner.

Not that their fans would have allowed it to happen of course
