Malky Mackay’s lack of ‘Plan B’ costs Cardiff City at Newcas

Sun Oct 06, 2013 2:15 pm

The loss to Newcastle United has left me pondering: does Malky Mackay have a plan B this season?A dreadful first-half saw Loic Remy run riot as Cardiff City looked completely disjointed.Whilst David Marshall was keeping up his one man show, proving that he’s the best keeper in the league at the moment, he was being let down by the players in front of him.Ben Turner and Steven Caulker looked sluggish at the back and ahead of Gary Medel there was little movement and no one looking for the ball.At half time, the introduction of last week’s hero Jordon Mutch provided Cardiff City with some much needed invigoration. He got the ball down, linked well with Medel and even pushed forward and attacked.Yet, for all our attacking play, we had little in the way of end product. We lack a cutting edge. Our system is geared up in a 4-5-1 and while Fraizer Campbell operates as a lone striker, we simply don’t play to his strengths. Ben Turner hoofs balls towards him, as if he’s going to win every header. He needs the ball at his feet, so he can run onto them. He has bundles of pace but we don’t give him the service he deserves. As the game wore on we attacked and attacked and it opened up.Why didn’t he withdraw Aron Gunnarson, who wasn’t at his best, and bring on Maynard switching to a 4-4-2 in the process? There was opportunity for Malky to make some changes, switch to a more attacking line-up, and push for the draw. But, instead, changes were like for like. Craig Bellamy came on for Campbell, pushing Peter Odemwingie up front. And then, with 10 minutes to go, Odemwingie was brought off for Maynard. So does Malky have a plan B at the moment? Why didn’t he withdraw Aron Gunnarson, who wasn’t at his best, and bring on Maynard switching to a 4-4-2 in the process?Putting Mutch at the top of a diamond will play to his strengths whilst Medel could anchor it beautifully.Perhaps Malky is waiting for Andreas Cornelius to return from injury before altering the formation, but the second-half against Newcastle was crying out for a different approach. He’s not stubborn, he’s got the ability to switch it around, but he seems a little reluctant to do it now

Lack of Plan A seemed to be the problem. Plan B was working.

He had a plan B. We were good in the second half. We lacked a plan A if anything

Just a bad day at the office they lacked their usual tempo, when they got it back they were the better team.

Also some bad defending from Caulker and Theo for the first goal they let Remy run and then cut inside for the goal, it looked really bad, when you watched it back on Match of the Day, but ray have both played excellent up until now, everyone makes mistake sometimes, they will learn.

Onwards and Upwards on to the next game. :ayatollah:

I'm not so sure I like these late 80 min substitutions, it doesn't allow the players to make much impact on the game!
