Fri Oct 04, 2013 6:18 pm

After 15 years ' Furby ' , Carl,Alison and Angharad's Family Dog, Sadly had to be put to sleep this morning, Its like losing a member of your family and some might think oh its only a dog, dogs can be a families best friend, dogs to me are certainly my best friend and one of my dogs I lost was like losing my family, to Angharad she is only 12, so she will have known Furby all her life. Carl, I know you found it hard to spk earlier and I understand. So my thoughts go out to you all x

15 years Old

Never "got" the whole dog bond, until I got my own 5 years ago. I can't imagine being without him now...

My sympathies go out to Carl and his family. :(

I know exactly how you feel. Had to have my 13 year old dog out down 2 months ago. Felt like I lost a child. They are members of the family not just pets. Hope
Everyone is ok.

Thanks guys, Furby is a perfect family pet. Loyal, obedient, loving, fun and a great companion.

Over the past few months her hearing had deteriorated and she developed arthritis in her back legs but on Tuesday Furby became very poorly.

A trip to the vet on Wednesday morning to be told Furby had mammary cancer but after an ultrasound scan her liver, kidneys, spleen and bladder were not affected, the cancer had not spread.

The vet wanted to take bloods to check there was no failure of the organs.

Whilst waiting for 30 mins for the results I took her for a stroll but less than 100 yards walking Furby suffered a fit/seizure.

I carried her and ran back to the vets who then done a chest x-ray thinking there was cancer of the lungs or maybe a chest infection but everything was clear, the bloods came back as perfect also.

So after each test came back positive, we knew she had cancer of the mammary glands but it had not spread but no idea why she suffered the seizure.

We brought her home with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory tablets and 'feel good' tablets to perk her up and on Wednesday evening everything looked positive as she was far more alert but struggling to get herself up and walk, once aided to her feet she seemed fine.

Yesterday Furby's condition worsened and each time she tried to get up and walk she suffered a seizure.

Early this morning Alison and I took her to the vet and it was explained to us that Furby symptoms suggested she has a tumor on the brain causing the collapses and rapid breathing.

The vet believed that within a week or two Furby was likely to have a heart attack and would suffer a lot of pain as a result.

She was put to sleep just after 9am this morning and I swear it is one of the most difficult things I have had to deal with, she was such a beautiful dog.

We have decided that Furby will be cremated and her ashes will return back to the home she has always known.

I am a softie when it comes to animals and children.

As you have experienced yourself it is difficult to deal with and there are plenty of tears shed.

I know the feeling mate, put 2 of my dogs to sleep in the last 2 years by far one of the hardest things ive had to do, they certainly are mans best friends.

I said i would NEVER have another one, but Marlie has just turned 1 and and is a bundle of joy. The only comfort is time mate. :ayatollah:

Dai, we got a two yr old Yorkie and she is a comfort though it is clear she is a little lost without Furby.

They have their own beds but once Furby had settled in hers, Millie would climb in with her and snuggle up.

I think the guilt I feel having her put to sleep is the hardest part, I kept telling myself she can pull through, anything that was remotely positive that the vet was saying I was believing I had a chance of bringing her back home.

My family dog went through a prolonged illness that we never had confirmed, but it all pointed to lung cancer.

The last time we took him into the vet I had my mother and brother with me, we didn't know that he wouldn't come home,

I'm dreading having to go through it again with my 2 cats, even more so for my girlfriend because she's never been in this situation.

Fully feel for you and your family, especially the kids, and other pets who won't understand where their companion has gone.

We had our dog cremated, we felt it was the best option to have him home

Its a kindness what you did it stops her suffering and she would of gone peacefully rather than in pain , its one of the worst things to go through losing a dog , they are family.

Paul, it is heartbreaking and I think all of us who have pets realise it will hurt when the time comes but when it actually happens it hits you more than you ever could imagine.

I really do want her back home.

Got our first dog five years ago, after both our sons moved out within months of each other, just me and the missus the house was just to quiet,so after much persuading she agreed we could get a dog, well five years on he really is my best friend and the thought that one day i will have to go through what you and your family have today, well brings tears to my eyes even thinking about it ,so i can fully understand how your feeling and hope that once the pain eases you will still have some great memories of a great family pet.
