' Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay insists Craig Bellamy's Fulham omission was to 'freshen up' squad '

Craig Bellamy is desperate to face former club Newcastle United

After leaving Craig Bellamy on the bench at Craven Cottage last Saturday, Malky Mackay has today said his decision to bring Peter Odemwingie into his starting 11 was correct

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has spoken for the first time about his contentious decision to axe Craig Bellamy insisting the frontman remains vital to his Premier League plans.

The Bluebirds skipper is desperate for a recall to Mackay’s starting line-up for tomorrow’s home clash with Newcastle, having been forced to make way for Peter Odemwingie in last weekend’s 2-1 triumph at Hull.

Bellamy is on the brink of calling time on his Wales career so he can focus upon playing regular Premier League matches for his hometown club in his 35th year.

Welsh boss Chris Coleman today named Bellamy in his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Macedonia and Belgium and also expects him to feature in a November friendly with Finland. But after that, Coleman conceded, it will almost certainly be the end for Bellamy as he throws his entire energies into the Bluebirds’ Premier cause.

But at club level, despite the arrival of £2m-man Odemwingie from West Brom, Mackay maintains that Bellamy will still prove pivotal in Cardiff’s first top flight campaign in more than half a century.

And with Newcastle arriving in the Welsh capital tomorrow, Mackay’s first decision is whether to start Bellamy against one of his former clubs or to utilise as he did at Craven Cottage late on from the bench.

“The change at Fulham was just to have a little bit of fresh impetus,” said Mackay.

“Craig is a massive part of everything we are doing here. He’s one of my main men. He’s one of the main leaders in the dressing room.

“But it’s about the squad. It’s about making sure we’ve got the right players out there and that we are making the right changes at the right time.

“That’s something I’ve done here for the last two years. People come in based on form and just the feeling they can do something that week.

“Bringing Odemwingie in was right. He looked very dangerous in that position for us.”

Peter Odemwingie protects the ball from Steve Sidwell
Bellamy missed Cardiff’s clash with Hull, and also became only a bit-part figure at Craven Cottage, after playing back to back full matches for Wales last time out against Macedonia (away) and Serbia (home).

Coleman selected him again for the upcoming return clash with Macedonia and the daunting game away to Group A leaders Belgium in Brussels.

But Coleman said: “Craig’s not getting any younger and just playing Premier League football for Cardiff at his age is a big enough ask.

“We’ve got these two matches, where we need him, followed by the Finland friendly in November.

“After that I will need to sit down with Craig and discuss his future properly. We want to go into the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a group of players who will be there for the duration, not have someone drop out after two or three games which could be the case with Craig.

“He has been a terrific servant for Wales, but he has to look after himself. He is still contracted to Cardiff City and playing regular Premier League football does take a lot of effort and energy.”

Bellamy doesn't deserve to be in starting 11 at the moment. He's giving his all but its not happening for him at the moment. Give him 20 minutes from the bench and i believe he can make a big impact.

Doesn't even deserve to be in the 18 man match day squad. Example being his moronic f*cking free kick where it was miles out yet he shot and it went miles wide. He's past it, Craig Hasbeen!!!

I'd keep Odemwingie playing for now. Bellamy can make an impact from the bench.

Don't think you are being particularly fair. Bellers has not done alot on the pitch. However he has the potential to unlock teams and needs to be involved in the squad as he is very influential with the other players.

Agree. 20mis+ would make a significant impact when the oppos legs are tiring. He should never have played the full 90 v Macedonia and I honestly think that it adversely affected him. Bloody Coleman again.

The prob is it looks like Bells will be playing in Wales next 2 meaningless games, not good for us.

It really is. Maybe he wants to play the full hit as he will be retiring from international duties after the qualifiers but as the games are essentially pointless, then the emphasis has to be preserving him for the club. Love Bellamy and still remember the day when it was confirmed he was joining us on loan from Citeh. It felt like we had just been given a secret weapon.

After the wasteful free kick he took v Fulham, I wouldn't want him no where near the team.

1-1 at the time and could have been a chance to put in the box but a 40 yard free kick is in Bellars range..

Roll all you want but he shouldn't start Saturday, stick to the bench.

I think Malky will bench him - he has shown that he will make big decisions and drop players for the good of the performance and I think Bellers will accept it given that he recently said this may be his last season. I still think he has a good role to play this year though and always has a touch of magic in him...

Bellars against their tiring full backs for half an hour could make all the difference, as they are not the best defensively. I wouldn't start him but definitely bring him on to give us the chance of late goals. Remember Odemwingie isn't fully match fit either, so that scenario should suit both players.

Nor me DANDO, but to say you don't want him near the team is daft!

Bit harsh, but agree with most on here he,s better as a bench warmer with Odemwingie starting

I would start him, he will be wanting to show Newcastle he still has it.

I dont think his form this season has been as bad as people make out. His decision making in an attacking sense hasnt been the best but his general game has been good.
