Cardiff City v Newcastle Utd this Saturday 3pm 5th October 2013.

Updated Friday 04th Oct 2013.

Malky has virtually a full squad to select from

With just Cornelius missing, who is expected to have a run out at Merthyr next Thursday night, when City will send a team up there to play Merthyr.

So With no new injury worries for the Cardiff City manager going into Saturday’s game, Malky is confident his side can continue their good start in the top flight so far, saying: “We just focus and concentrate on the team that’s in front of us and don’t get too high or too low with results.

“I certainly hoped for a start like this. We had three of the top six in the first three home games, which was always going to be tough but the whole league is like that. We’re talking about good players and good teams that we’re playing against. It’s about us going into these games with belief and I’m delighted with the belief that the players have shown.

“Any game at home you try and win and you know that every away game is going to be tough. At the same time it’s about sending your team out on the day to be as competitive as you can.”

" Cardiff City v Newcastle Utd Preview "

' Newcastle Utd another huge test '

Alan Pardew’s Magpies – up next

As Cardiff grabbed their first Premier League away win at Fulham last Saturday, they also passed two significant tests.

Firstly, they bounced back from defeat at home to Spurs and second they showed they are structured to win games on the road, something that will be hugely important in the coming months.

The next test is massive. As good as the win against Manchester City was, the relief at the dogged draw with Everton and the performance of the team in the loss to Spurs, Newcastle now provide a much more interesting match-up.

Where Cardiff defended for their lives in the first three home games, they will be expected to play a more attack minded game against the Magpies. The win over Fulham will have boosted confidence and the fans expectations.

Alan Pardew’s team right now are rather hot and cold. An opening day thumping at Manchester City was proceeded by a recovery draw at home to West Ham 0-0. Two wins followed, one at home to Fulham 1-0 and the other at Aston Villa 2-1. Next followed 3-2 losses at home to Hull City and at Everton. Inconsistent is the label for the Geordies right now.

Newcastle United boasts a bevy of sparkling internationals. Of course Yohan Cabaye leads the way and his half-time introduction to the line-up at Everton almost turned around a 3-0 half-time deficit as the Magpies pulled two back inspired by the mercurial Frenchman. Add Loic Remy, Pappis Cisse, Moussa Sissoko, Hatem Ben Arfa and the class of this Newcastle team is obvious.

Just as in the first three home games Cardiff has denied their opponents space in the final third, they will have to do the same in the next. Despite Newcastle’s obvious inconsistencies, admitted by Pardew himself at the post game interview following the Everton game, they are far too dangerous in attack to take lightly.

Where Newcastle can be caught is on recovering after they lose the ball. The Bluebirds have showed an enormous appetite for hard work, staying in shape and are tremendously well organized, something Pardew’s team could learn from.

Newcastle is in 16th place and one point below Cardiff. If they are still in that place after the game this Saturday, Cardiff will be satisfied, if not entirely so.

To take Cabaye and co. lightly by thinking City can press forward on the front foot would be to tempt disaster. Right now the Magpies are a poor man’s Spurs. They have the flair and imagination but lack the solidity and organization. Alan Pardew could be coaching a team ready to explode and charge up the table, certainly a top ten finish is in their control, or he could continue to endure the troubling inconsistency that has dogged them for so long.

Malky Mackay has a massive decision to make. This result will be a defining one in the early season jostling for position. While most Cardiff fans will expect a win, I’m not so sure it is likely. It is achievable for sure but the outcome will depend more on Newcastle’s form than it will on Cardiff’s .

How Mackay lines his team up and how he approaches this game could be a more difficult decision than any yet taken this season. Up to now he has almost always called things correctly and navigated the right course. He will need to do the same thing on Saturday.

I anticipate a same again home philosophy, where Newcastle will be afforded the very same respect as Manchester City, Everton and Spurs were given.

The Cardiff fans will be expecting a win I’m sure. Expectations are rising as the season takes shape. I hope for the win but I expect the draw. Although somehow I feel a Premier League learning lesson coming on and a Newcastle win a distinct possibility.

Could be some changes for Newcastle - Pardew has talked about going to two up front and he's not too happy with Ben Arfa.

and me - even though it is the City and we still can't quite believe we're there, you look at it dispassionately and if we play to our strengths, we are a well-organised team who can play some nice stuff in attack like we did at Fulham, and like we did at times against Man City and Spurs.

Newcastle looked completely disinterested first half against Everton - but then came back into it. The key for me is when we have dominance we make use of it - and when Newcastle have dominance we play tight and mean like we have done for the last 2 seasons.

The pressure is on Newcastle, not us. Who knows what muppetry goes on behind closed doors there - Jo public gets to see some of it from time to time, but what goes on behind closed doors must be like a TV soap.

I fancy a win here!

Theres no denying that Newcastle have the ability to cause us trouble at the back, but they lack cohesion IMO and are a team of individuals!

No reason not to really go for it here. If we mix up our style against Man City and a possession game we can win comfortably. They don't strike me as a team willing to work for each other this year

No side have seen more goals scored in the 90th minute or later of their Barclays Premier League games this season than Cardiff (3).

Newcastle United have won their last six successive meetings with Cardiff City in all competitions.

The Magpies have conceded a league-high three headed goals in the Premier League this season so far.

Loïc Remy has now been involved in four goals in four Premier League appearances for Newcastle (scored three and assisted another).

Newcastle have won just three of their last 23 Premier League away games, losing 13 of these matches.

Cardiff City have lost just three of their 26 home games in league competition since the start of 2012-13 (W16, D7).

The Welsh side have committed only 50 fouls in their six Premier League games so far; a league-low figure.

Papiss Demba Cisse has now gone 12 successive Premier League appearances without a goal for Newcastle.

Should he score against his former side, Craig Bellamy will become the first player in the history of the Barclays Premier League to score for seven different clubs in the competition.

Newcastle have made six errors that have led to an opposition attempt at goal in the Premier League this season; more than any other side.

They've been more patient than us - we need to slow it down and stop lumping it forward so much.

Have to admit we're shit at the moment. Can't string three passes together. Newcastle pressing well. I see nothing but a home defeat here. Hope I'm wrong :?

This is a thrashing which was always going to come with Malky's tactics of inviting pressure on ourselves. We won't always get away with it. Hardly surprised tbh.

Suicidal football... Newcastle have shown if you attack them and get in there faces they're pants...(see first half v Everton)
But if you stand off and invite them they can be dangerous (see 2nd half)

How can Malky Not see that? And plays the same style as Everton and Spurs games...
If we keep this style at home we will struggle..

Come on city FFS :ayatollah:

Good move from Odemwingie late on but I'd bring Bellers on in the 2nd to try and shore things up and get some discipline. Again, we've been lumping it too much and we've looked better when we've slowed it down and passed it.

Palace are getting smashed 3.0 should have been 8-9 I heard. Liverpool are certain to add more when they return. If we could somehow get a draw that would be a great result and I wouldn't put it past us. :ayatollah:

Kim has been shit. Gunnar not much better. Mutch & Noone on, let's cause them some bother.

Mutch for Gunnar
Noone for Kim

Campbell & Odemwinge up front. Campbell has been so isolated again & needs support.

Couldn't think of a better phrase to sum it up if I tried.

Dave Jones = too attacking, weak defensively and it cost us time and time again = Roberto Martinez = sussed out
Malky Mackay = too defensive, not attacking and it cost us = Paolo Sousa = sussed out

Its time we got our Brendan Rodgers in before we end up back in the Championship.

Sorry but there are only so many times Malky will get bailed out by the likes of Mutch coming off the bench to score a wonder strike. We are being sussed each time. All that needs to be done to open us up is let us have the ball and counter attack or stretch us across the pitch and then slide a ball in behind the full back. Its very easy to see.

If people think these inept tactics are going to keep us up then they are in serious need of counselling. Its a sport, not speed dating and people need to realise the club is more important than any manager or player. Malky has done good by us of course and we should always be grateful for that but we must also appreciate his flaws and unfortunately for us they are flaws that will most likely take us back down.

Being a bit dramatic here James.

Sod it let me go further.

This is the performance that could be the start of the end for Malky. If we don't get anything out of this game then he will have to get a performance like the one against Man City for the next few games. I do feel it will be too much.
