Cardiff City's international stars facing more round the world trips as World Cup qualifiers loom
2nd Oct 2013
The likes of Kim Bo-Kyung and Gary Medel will be heading far afield as South Korea face Brazil and Mali, while Chile take on Columbia and Ecuador
Kim Bo-Kyung, Cardiff City’s creative midfield player, is preparing to face the boys from Brazil.
Bluebirds ace Kim is in South Korea’s squad for their friendly matches against Brazil at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and Mali, at Cheonan 90 miles away, during the international break which starts after City’s Premier League home match against Newcastle United this Saturday.
Korea have already qualified for the World Cup finals in Brazil next year, finishing second in their group behind Iran.
Coach Hong Myungbo has announced a 25-man squad, including Kim, for the two friendlies.
In-form Sunderland midfielder Ki Sung Yueng is back in the national team after injury.
Gary Medel flies out to join Chile’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Colombia away next Friday and Ecuador at home in Santiago the following Tuesday.
Chile are already close to qualification and can make sure over these two matches.
Kim and Medel, along with City’s other internationals, return to Cardiff after completing their international commitments and go straight into the Bluebirds’ Premier League match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Aron Gunnarsson, Iceland’s captain, is another City player dreaming of being in Brazil next summer. Iceland have a solid chance of making that trip, but have to produce the right results against Cyprus at home next Friday and then Norway away.
They are within reach of claiming a World Cup play-off spot as one of the best eight runners-up from the nine European qualification groups.
