Cardiff City 'Can't Afford' More Star players

National News Agency of Malaysia

Vincent Tan has confirmed that such spending will not continue in January 2014.
" We have financial constraints compared with other EPL clubs."

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has warned there are unlikely to be any big money names to bolster Malky Mackay's ranks in the January transfer window. City have startedr the season encouragingly and look a side certainly able to compete in the Premiership. However, avoiding relegation remains the sole priority and one which will be an excellent achivement if we can manage it.

Tan has backed Mackay handsomely in the transfer market, and few could have hoped that the financial clout to sign Caulker, Medel and Cornelius for such high fees, along with the likes of Odemwingie and Theophile-Catherine who, although relatively inexpensive, already look to be very good signings.

Tan has confirmed that such spending will not continue in January, but we may yet be in the market for a player or two if the right ones come along within budget and we need to strengthen. The need to add players is key, rather than just for the sake of adding to the sqquad and Tan has stated that results will define what business we do.

Speaking to the National News Agency of Malaysia, Tan said:

'If our team's performance is good until January, then there is no need for me to buy new players. We also can't afford to buy star players since we have financial constraints compared with other EPL clubs.'

CCFC is still in a precarious position in financial terms, with massive liabilites and debts against the club. However, the resolution of the Langston debacle, coupled with Tan's ambition to convert his loans to equity would give an entirely different look to the fiscal summaries.

There is a lot to be said for a well balanced and settled squad, and it's very difficult for players to come in during January and integrate into a new environment quickly especially with the burden of a big money valuation. If City can sonsolidate the current position and continue to show the form and character on display so far, January is likely to pass without much notice from fans. However, if we are caught up in a relegation scrap, the reaction may be somewhat different.

Intresting. Might be a load of guff though just so other clubs dont hold us to ransom over transfer fees. If another player of Caulkers stature was available in January and Malky wanted him i'm sure Tan wouldn't dissapoint!

In my opinion we have done our business in the summer transfer window. Going by Malky's previous January transfers, I cant see us signing more than two players anyways, as he likes to do his business in the summer. We only signed additional players due to injuries.

Tan has also taken stick for his investment in Cardiff City in Malaysia, where the economy is on the downturn and maybe he his just appeasing Malaysian public and politicians

All good sense, good business and good management. All clubs now have to work under the financial constraint of expenditure being a percentage of income, and a lot of our players going out on loan are taking a big chunk of costs with them.

Malky is getting about things quietly and efficiently as i see it, and in Malky we should trust. :malky:

Exactly. In this division the difference a couple of quality players will make is immense. If we are comfortably mid table he won't spend unless Malky finds a bargain. Malky will want to start putting his team together for 2014/15 if we look like staying up....January is a good time to start.

Tan is learning the game, that is all this is.
He said at the end of the season that we would have £25m to spend, which most of us agreed was a mistake on his part.
It drove up the price of our targets(£8m Ince example).

It's all about financial management, In fairness to Tan he gave Malky substantial funds in the summer and he has strengthened the side well -

This season was all about staying up I believe that Malky has built a good enough side to do so.

Tan has been prudent with the purse strings ever since he has arrived if there is any business to be done in January it will be in the loan market with squad players being moved on

I agree, A bit more strength in depth, but we have a solid first 11 to survive imo

I'd be happy getting in a loan player or two if possible

Well maybe if we stopped paying too much for individual players we would have a bit more cash.

The loan system is there, we should use it. Swansea, West Brom and Everton have shown it's the perfect thing to do. We still need a few signings to survive, such as a winger, a striker and a central defender.

Odemwingie is our best striker who should not be playing wide, Bellamy is past it and offers nothing but experience and Maynard is not the striking option I see when I think of Premier League survival. A winger and striker, i'll be happy. A central defender as well and that would be a perfect window.
