' Steve McClaren confirmed as new Derby County manager following sacking of Nigel Clough '

Steve McClaren is targeting a swift return to the Premier League after being handed the chance to repair his managerial reputation with Derby County.

Return of the Mc: England's former manager Steve McClaren was in charge of Derby County almost 20 years ago.

McClaren has agreed to succeed Nigel Clough at the club he served as a player and assistant manager and is determined to end Derby's exile from the top tier, with a play-off challenge expected this season.

The former England manager was so keen to return to management that he told Derby he was not concerned with a lucrative salary and while he will be well paid, he is understood to be far from being one of the top earners in the division.
Derby controversially dismissed Clough on Saturday as they were unconvinced he was the man to take them back to the top flight and the club's American owners have moved for McClaren in a bid to deliver promotion.
It is McClaren's first managerial role in England since his turbulent spell with Derby's East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest in 2011, when he resigned after just 112 days following a row over a lack of financial backing.
Derby's board have been criticised in recent years for operating on a small budget but McClaren will still be expected to mastermind a promotion challenge.

He said: "The remit in two-and-a-half years is that we've got to be challenging for the play-offs, then getting into the top six and then we've got to be an actual contender to get into the Premier League.
"That is the ambition we've got and the owners have to share that ambition. We've had three or four years of keeping this club stable but we now have to kick on. It's everybody's responsibility to do that.
"We need to go to the next level and that's my job. We want to take it to the next step and to where it belongs to be.
"We want to keep the style of football and attitude of the players and we want to develop that. I've got some history with the club and have had some fantastic, successful times where we achieved something.
"To come back here as the manager is something special. I'm looking forward to the challenge and this club has got fantastic potential."

Paul Simpson, another former Derby player, and the former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have been appointed as McClaren's backroom staff.
Steele was a surprise exit from United this summer after David Moyes opted to bring in Chris Woods from Everton and has been hugely influential in the development of David De Gea.
Derby are also set to appoint a technical director to work in tandem with McClaren in a drastic revamp of their football infrastructure.
McClaren's arrival ends a three-month spell with Rangers, where he was recruited by Harry Redknapp and played a major role in their impressive start to the season.
Redknapp admitted the departure of the 52-year-old will be significant. "It's a massive blow for us because Steve has been first class since he joined us at QPR," he said.
"It was my decision to get him in and he's played a big part in the terrific start we've had, that's for sure.
"He's made no secret of the fact he wants to get back into management and we always said we wouldn't stand in his way if somebody does come in for him."

McClaren will be officially unveiled on Tuesday morning and will then observe the game against Ipswich, with academy manager Darren Wassall taking charge.
This is his third spell at the club, after three years as a player was followed by a successful stint working under Jim Smith in the 1990s.
Sam Rush, Derby's president and chief executive, said: "Our goal is to have Derby County competing for a play-off place and beyond, and we feel with Steve and his team at the helm we have a great opportunity to do so.
"Steve is a highly qualified coach with all the skill-sets required to be a success here at Pride Park.
“He also has a network of contacts both on a European and global scale, and has also proved in the past that he can identify talent and develop it on the training ground, especially younger players.
"Steve was a driving force behind the club’s promotion under Jim Smith in the 1990s and you only have to look at his CV to discover what a hugely talented coach he is.
"We are very much looking forward to letting Steve get on with the job in hand and helping Derby County move in the right direction."

McClaren hopes to seal Rams return
Steve McClaren arrived at Derby's Pride Park stadium on Monday hopeful of thrashing out a deal to become the club's new manager.
The former England boss, who played for the Rams in the mid to late 1980s, arrived for talks about the possibility of succeeding Nigel Clough.
Clough was sacked on Saturday evening just hours after Derby's 1-0 defeat to East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest at the City Ground after more than four-and-a-half years in charge.
As he entered the stadium, McClaren told Sky Sports News: ''It's great to be back in Derby, hopefully we can work something out.''
His arrival at Pride Park will mark the completion of a circle for the man who guided Middlesbrough to League Cup glory and FC Twente to the Dutch title.
McClaren played for Derby and returned to make his name as a coach with the Rams under Jim Smith, helping the team to Premier League promotion in 1996, before getting his big chance as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
McClaren, who was in charge of England for 18 months after succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2006, has been working as first-team coach at QPR since July.
