' NOT AS LAUGHABLE AS YOU THINK '

Thu Sep 26, 2013 12:10 pm

Thursday September 26th.

Big Ben Turner for England?

Cue laughter and howls of derision from the cynics.

To which I offer two words in reply: Ricky Lambert.

In his 32nd year, and after a largely journeyman career that saw him play for Macclesfield, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers before joining Southampton, Lambert has won England honours under Roy Hodgson. And scored two goals in his first three matches.

I’m not, for one fraction of a second, suggesting Turner is good enough to play in a three Lions centre-back shirt previously adorned by the likes of Bobby Moore, Roy McFarland, Des Walker, Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand.

But given Ferdinand and John Terry have hung up their international boots, it’s not as if Hodgson has anyone of the class above to call upon any more.

The jury still has to be out at that level on Hodgson’s first-choice duo of Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka. Brazil 2014 will tell us a lot about those two.

Next in line, it seems, are Turner’s Bluebirds team-mate Steven Caulker, plus the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who struggle to get into Manchester United’s team.

Spurs skipper Michael Dawson, a colossus at Cardiff City Stadium last Sunday, and Ryan Shawcross have been jettisoned.

Hodgson is simply looking to bolster his options and has been alerted to Turner after the 6ft 4in Bluebirds defender helped blot out threats from Sergio Aguero (Man City), Nikica Jelavic (Everton) and Roberto Soldado (Spurs) this season.

Turner doesn’t have the distribution skills required for international football, although he could still have done a damn good job next to Ashley Williams for Wales had he accepted Chris Coleman’s offer to play for the Dragons.

But I’m delighted he is making waves in the Premier because I always believed he could play at that level.

Why? Because, unlike skipper Mark Hudson, Turner has legs.

He may look big and cumbersome, but he can’t half eat up the ground. Many a time he did just that to put in last-gasp, intimidating sliding tackles on strikers in the Championship.

He did something similar to Kyle Walker on Sunday, and they don’t come any more whippet-like than the England right-back.

Turner for England? Probably not. But the fact he has attracted the eye of Hodgson underlines just how splendidly he has been playing for Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds

He will do well for England Carl and wont have to defend 20 shots per game like he does for us. He will look even better and more composed in a squad that can actually keep the ball and control it rather than losing possession and invite pressure.

It would be silly of them not to be watching Caulker and Turner, I think Caulker has more class for interational level but if Turner can continue to improve then why not.

To play international football you need to have composure and that is something Big Ben does not have as everytime he is given the ball he shits himself and cant wait to get rid.
He is only playing instead of Huds as he is naturally left footed and it balances the two centre halves out rather than two right footers.
Caulker on the other hand is going to be a very very good player who oozes class already for someone so young and we are lucky to have him. :D

Who exactly is the "I" here? This is a straight copy & paste of someone else's article. The source/author of the original article should be acknowledged when copying/plagiarising another's work.

Carl , you really don't seem a very bright person some times if I may say so.
Sorry to bring last week up again, but here you go again trying to pass someones work as your own.
You must be very insecure!!

Whats wrong with being honest in the first place rather than be made look foolish AGAIN!

The irony of your post is that I was not passing anything off as my own work last week or today, in case you hadn't noticed we as moderators post a lot of media stories for people to read but we don't claim it to be our own work at all.

Anyone that read that and thought it was Carl trying to pass it off as his own needs to have a real think, there are always cut and paste articles at the top of the forum, why have a pop at him now? I read it as it was and knew it was something he was passing on, a lot of sniping on here recently.

Precisely!

Personally, I know it isnt beyond the realm of possibility, but I don't think he should be called yet, and I don't think he will be.

The publicity is nice though

Well, if it could (and did) happen to Jay Bothroyd, the Ben Turner has a very good chance ;) :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Why not?

Common courtesy (never mind copyright law) to the author of the article and the website that it is published on would be to provide the link to that site rather than just copy and paste, or plagiarise.

These websites survive through hits to such articles as you know yet the only links provided from this site are either to articles written by yourself, or to that ridiculous football casuals site which is obviously owned by someone with an affiliation to this board.

What it comes down to is that England don't have that many central defenders to call upon. They have Cahill and Jagielka and then they struggle. Turner is not likely to be considered their 3rd or 4th choice but if they get injuries they need options on the bench. That is where Turner comes in.
