Big Ben Turner for England?
Cue laughter and howls of derision from the cynics.
To which I offer two words in reply: Ricky Lambert.
In his 32nd year, and after a largely journeyman career that saw him play for Macclesfield, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers before joining Southampton, Lambert has won England honours under Roy Hodgson. And scored two goals in his first three matches.
I’m not, for one fraction of a second, suggesting Turner is good enough to play in a three Lions centre-back shirt previously adorned by the likes of Bobby Moore, Roy McFarland, Des Walker, Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand.
But given Ferdinand and John Terry have hung up their international boots, it’s not as if Hodgson has anyone of the class above to call upon any more.
The jury still has to be out at that level on Hodgson’s first-choice duo of Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka. Brazil 2014 will tell us a lot about those two.
Next in line, it seems, are Turner’s Bluebirds team-mate Steven Caulker, plus the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who struggle to get into Manchester United’s team.
Spurs skipper Michael Dawson, a colossus at Cardiff City Stadium last Sunday, and Ryan Shawcross have been jettisoned.
Hodgson is simply looking to bolster his options and has been alerted to Turner after the 6ft 4in Bluebirds defender helped blot out threats from Sergio Aguero (Man City), Nikica Jelavic (Everton) and Roberto Soldado (Spurs) this season.
Turner doesn’t have the distribution skills required for international football, although he could still have done a damn good job next to Ashley Williams for Wales had he accepted Chris Coleman’s offer to play for the Dragons.
But I’m delighted he is making waves in the Premier because I always believed he could play at that level.
Why? Because, unlike skipper Mark Hudson, Turner has legs.
He may look big and cumbersome, but he can’t half eat up the ground. Many a time he did just that to put in last-gasp, intimidating sliding tackles on strikers in the Championship.
He did something similar to Kyle Walker on Sunday, and they don’t come any more whippet-like than the England right-back.
Turner for England? Probably not. But the fact he has attracted the eye of Hodgson underlines just how splendidly he has been playing for Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds

Carl , you really don't seem a very bright person some times if I may say so.
Sorry to bring last week up again, but here you go again trying to pass someones work as your own.
You must be very insecure!!
Whats wrong with being honest in the first place rather than be made look foolish AGAIN!

I read it as it was and knew it was something he was passing on, a lot of sniping on here recently.
