Individual mistakes for all 3 goals

Wed Sep 25, 2013 10:14 am

I'm sorry to say Brayford was at fault for their first 2 goals and McNaughton was at fault for their winner. Brayford let Morrison turn inside him to score their first and Brayford then put in a pathetically weak slide tackle leading to their second. Brayford simply wasn't strong enough for either goal, their second in particular his slide tackle was half hearted, he should have wanted it more than the West Ham player and dealt with it.

Their third goal reminded me of Burnley's equaliser against us last season, McNaughton not being strong enough to hold Vaz Te off to deal with the cross to the back post. McNaughton didn't even put an arial challenge in to stop him heading it in.

It's a shame with Brayford as I rated him and I was delighted we signed him but for some reason, he hasn't been featuring. I'm sorry to say that I have to question Brayford's attitude for how soft he was for West Ham's first 2 goals and I can see why Malky is not playing him at the moment. Hopefully he will improve and turn into the player I thought he would be for us before we signed him.

Agree on the first two goals but I think you're being a bit harsh on McNaughton for the 3rd.

West Ham did well to get Vaz Te on the back post meaning he was against a full back in the air rather than a centre back. I think Theo would have done better with all three though !!

Perhaps I'm being a little harsh. I wasn't there last night but I'm assuming Vaz Te played on the wing which would mean he was McNaughton's man? If I am wrong I will obviously stand corrected, but my immediate thought when I watched their third goal on SSN was "Burnley's equaliser". I agree Theo would have done better with all three. I'm worried about Brayford, I went to Accrington and I wasn't overly impressed with him there either playing in his natural right back position.

If Vaz Te was playing wide then it doesn't really change things as the simple fact is that he's bigger and stronger than your average winger and is always likely to cause a full back problems in the air. Just one of those things that you hope doesn't get exposed :ayatollah:

I accept Vaz Te is taller, bigger and stronger than McNaughton, but you don't see good full backs who are small in stature getting caught out like Philip Lahm, Patrice Evra, Leighton Baines, Dani Alves etc. They know if they can't win a header, they still get their body in the way or put in some sort of challenge to put their man off and stop them making a clean contact with the ball. McNaughton didn't even put a challenge in.

I think McNaughton was static and flat footed when the cross come over so he didn't have much of a chance. I know it was late in the game and there was a size difference, but McNaughton has played centre back a few times this season and being a defender, he should be used to handling arial challenges from crosses. Even if he couldn't stop Vaz Te scoring, I would have expected McNaughton to at least compete and put some sort of challenge in. If McNaughton competed, he may have done enough to put Vaz Te off in my opinion.
