Spurs fans snub FA with Yid chants 40 minutes before match has even bugun,
But The Board of Deputies of British Jews has backed the FA’s stance.

The team were playing away at Cardiff City and many fans started chanting the term as soon as they got off the train.

Defiant Spurs supporters ignored the FA’s demands to stop using the word Yid by persistently singing it throughout yesterday’s match.

The team were playing away at Cardiff City and many fans started chanting the term as soon as they got off the train.

Around 40 minutes before the 4pm kick-off “We’re Tottenham Hotspur, we’ll sing what we want”, resounded around the stadium, followed by “Yid Army” and later “Yids, Yids, Yids”.

Most stood up for the whole game as they bellowed the songs. Barely five minutes passed between chants.

Fan Roger Maltz, 64, said: “I am Jewish. I remember the 1967 FA Cup final when I was attacked by skinhead yobs for being a ‘Yid’. For the past 10 or 15 years it has been used as a defence mechanism. We are just reclaiming our identity.”

Dave Beese, 55, and his son Adam, 26, also insisted: “The word is used in the right context. It’s entirely used in a positive manner. There isn’t a problem with this.”

The Premier League game, which Tottenham won 1-0, was the North London team’s first since PM David Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband joined the debate over the term, which some regard as an offensive name for a Jew.

The FA warned fans they could be prosecuted if they used it, but Mr Cameron argued it was acceptable for Spurs supporters to say.

He added: “There’s a difference between Spurs fans self-describing themselves as Yids and someone calling someone a Yid as an insult.

“You have to be motivated by hate. Hate speech should be prosecuted, but only when it is motivated by hate.” Mr Miliband also said he was against moves to prosecute. He said he did not like the term, but the fans were not anti-Semitic and that politicians should leave the issue to football chiefs.

The row blew up after the FA said earlier this month: “The FA considers that the use of the term Yid is likely to be considered offensive by the reasonable observer and considers the term inappropriate in a football setting.

“Use of the term could amount to a criminal offence.”

The Board of Deputies of British Jews has backed the FA’s stance.

Tonight the British Prime Minister David Cameron defended the right for Spurs supporters to chant " Yids " or " Yid army " at football matches, even after the English FA said any fan chanted it would face criminal charges.

David Cameron told the Jewish Chronicle

" There's a difference between Spurs fans self-describing themselves as " Yids " and someone calling someone a " Yid " as an insult . "
" You have to be motivated by hate, hate speech should be prosecuted-but only when it's motivated by hate "

' 'Yid Army' Chant: Spurs Fans Warned Of Charges '

Tottenham fans who proudly chant "Yid Army" due to their perceived Jewish following face prosecution under new FA rules.

Thursday 12 September 2013

The Football Association has warned fans who use the word "Yid" they will face criminal charges - even if they follow Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs fans proudly chant "Yid Army" in response to the perception they have a large Jewish following.

But the FA has this week published new guidelines over the use of the word and warned fans they face prosecution.

The statement says that although it acknowledges Spurs fans may use the term as a "badge of honour", any use "is likely to be considered offensive".

The governing body adds: "By using the term in this manner, fans may be clouding the issue by making it harder to differentiate its use by these fans and by those who use the term in an intentionally offensive manner.

Baddiel wrote a film about the "Y-word" in a campaign against racism
"Further, use of the term in a public setting could amount to a criminal offence, and leave those fans liable to prosecution and potentially a lengthy football banning order."

Spurs reacted by announcing they were launching a wide-scale consultation on how to deal with the matter.

"We are acutely aware of the sensitivity of this issue," Spurs said in a statement.

"Our fans historically adopted the chant as a defence mechanism in order to own the term and thereby deflect anti-Semitic abuse. They do not use the term with any deliberate intent to cause offence."

Tottenham fans, visiting stadiums abroad, have been the subject of a series of racist attacks recently.

In November, two Roma fans were banned from all sporting events for five years after a Spurs fan was stabbed in the thigh.

And in February three men believed to be from a far-right group were arrested after an attack on Spurs fans in a bar in Lyon.

In addition, two West Ham fans were arrested and accepted a police caution for anti-Semitic gestures during their team's 3-1 defeat at White Hart Lane in November.

One of them was given a lifetime banning order by the east London club.

In April 2011, comedian, writer and Jewish Chelsea fan David Baddiel wrote a one-minute film entitled "Y-word".

The film was part of the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign featuring then Tottenham captain Ledley King, former Spurs striker Gary Lineker, Chelsea's Frank Lampard and Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs.

An IT worker appeared in court today accused of trying to have sex with a sheep next to Tottenham Hotspur's new training ground. Paul Lovell, 61, was allegedly caught with the animal close to the state-of-the-art facility on Hotspur Way, Enfield, north London, on September 4. It is thought stars from the Premier League team were training at the centre on the day of the incident.

Offence is subjective thus to take offence to something you choose to do so and that therefore implies you are in fact a massive drama queen.
