I wrote on this forum at the end of last season, how difficult it would be, and the patience needed to survive in the top flight. yesterday was a classic example of what it is going to take to be successful in this devision, there couldn't have been one person that was not disappointed in the result yesterday, I remember in 1961 when we were last in the top flight we lost at least four matches all quite close to each other by at least three clear goals, then we put a run together and went up to six'th, and then a bad run, and we finished just above relegation, the following season was the same, but this time we went up to fif'th and then we were relegated. The lesson I learnt from that was, that we were never going to be a top team just because we were in the 1st devision, even though Burnley had just won the title and were in Europe. you have to learn to survive first before you can claim any thing
It took us 81 years to reach our third FA cup Final, and 51 years to get back in the top flight, now we have to learn some lessons from games like last Sunday, we have to take a piece each time from games, this season and the next is all about survival, nothing else nothing less,
I firmly believe that the club is better organised, better back room staff, better manager and certainly better of financially than in 1962, so the only way is forward.
From our point of view ( the fans) we have to hang in there, and stick by the club what ever decisions are made, just because we don,t win or get the result we think we deserve, we don't stay away, because true fans don't do that, we follow trough thick and thin, so remember when it is pissing down with rain or freezing cold or you don't want to leave the warm'th of your home, that there is at least fifteen players out there trying their best to give us a club that can compete in the top flight for years to come, most won't be in our city forever, but people like you and I will, even if I have to use my Zimmer frame to get there, I will still follow the City where ever they are.
