QUESTION FOR THE OLDIES

Thu Sep 19, 2013 5:28 pm

We have had some great goalies over the years, but was it Fred Davies who was the madcap one, I seem to remember he was a bit loopy in a nice way, or am I mixing him up with another, and was he around the same time as Bob Wilson or did he come after that era? :old:

I seem to remember he resembled Freddy "Parrot Face" Davies  Didn't he get injured before the European Cup Winners Cup semi- final and was replaced by Bob Wilson - and we all know what happened then

I seem to remember him wearing a real old Dai cap, and having a fair old nose on him, plus a pair of super ears, in fact the more I think back, the more he reminds me of Freddie Parrot face. ;)

What site could I look up old player stats?

Bob Wilson had the reputation of being prone to mistakes. Terrible mistake against SV Hamburg?
Fred Davies was very dependable. Yes, the goalie for City when I started supporting them as a 15 year old.

Fred Davies was class

There used to a song in those days

Aye, aye, aye, aye Davies is better than Yashin
Toshack is better than Eusebio
and "nnnnnnn" are in for a thrashing.

Ronne Bird, winger, fans favourite. He could only kick the ball two ways, hard and very hard. He used to run at the middle of defences then shoot from outside the box and either smash it in or hit the corner flag.

Davies was a sound keeper

Always liked Ron Healey, had some decent youngsters in Mel Rees and Andy Dibble, Gavin Ward did well for us in early nineties. Think Billy Irwin was agile and nimble on his feet in earlier 70's and had to fight for number 1 spot with the more imposing Jim Eadie who liked a pint.

Steve do you remember Frank Parson's ? I think Jim Eadie took over from him, after Parson's horror show against Middlesboro, we were 3-1 up and lost 4-3 due to some horrendus mistakes by him .

Bob wilson was just before fred davies, davies was the keeper when i first started watching the city, (1971) the best keeper i have seen at the city, of course, bob wilson will be rememberd for his mistake he made at ninian park in the second leg of the cup winners cup semi final against sv hamburg, 1-1 after the first leg and he let in a howler in the last minute to put hamburg through to the final.

I remember Bob Wilson was going to land one on the goal keeper from Real Zaragoza, Bob Wilson couldnt play as he was cup tie, but Derek Tapscott , was on the floor and the real keeper lifted Tap up bu one leg & one arm and dragged him off the field of play and Wilson went crazy .

Fred Davis and Bob Wilson (not the Arsenal one) battled it out late 60s early 70,s, Fred Davis was class :ayatollah: :old: :ayatollah:

If i remember correctly Fred Davies was illegible for some reason for the European cup run, Bob Wilson may well be remembered for the mistake in the Hamburg game but it was his heroics in the previous round against Moscow Torpedo that had got us to the semi. Going back to Fred Davies, i'm sure he played the league games but Wilson played in the cup.

Gwyn I remember being in Giles sports on the day Fred Davies was to make his debut for us, there were four of us who had caught the train from Maesteg so to kill time we went in, after a while I said to my mate isn't that Fred Davies? He was in there buying goalie gloves, we were all in awe of him as he had come from Wolves, it was a missed opportunity to speak to him, one of those things that you live to regret.
