Premier League trio swap boots for books by signing up for language course

Cardiff City players Gary Medel, Kevin Theophile-Catherine and Maximiliano Amondarain visit the Cardiff and Vale college as they sign on for language courses.
A trio of Cardiff City’s foreign signings have gone back to school – to improve their English.

Chilean international Gary Medel, City’s £9.5m club record signing, left Spanish club Saville to join the Bluebirds in the summer.

The 26-year-old yesterday admitted he was still getting used to the Welsh weather.

“It’s a lovely city and everybody seems to go out of their way to make me welcome, but it’s also very cold,” he told pupils at Cardiff and Vale College.

“I do miss the food and the weather in Seville, but I have found the people are just as nice in both cities.

“I have settled in, I love playing for Cardiff City and can’t wait for this Sunday’s home match against Spurs.”

Medel yesterday enrolled at Cardiff and Vale College with French full-back Kevin Theophile-Catherine and Uruguyan defender Maxi Amondarain.

Cardiff fitness coach Martyn Pert, who is fluent in Spanish, helps Medel communicate with manager Malky Mackay.

Theophile-Catherine and Amondarain, a 20 year-old central defender, already speak reasonable English and are looking to improve.

They follow in the footsteps of South Korean star Kim Bo-Kyung who started studying English last year. Bo-Kyung has made excellent progress having been able to speak only a few words when he first arrived.

Fellow pupils were quick to ask the footballers to show off their body art, with Medel lifting his shirt to reveal 14 tattoos.

“I have a lot – 14 in all,” said Medel. “My favourites are on my chest, but I have a lot on my arms as well.”

Montevideo-born Amondarain, 20, was quick to lift his left shirt sleeve and show off a tattoo depicting Jesus Christ.

“I have seven in all – and that’s the one I like best,” he said.

Theophile-Catherine, a former France Under 21 right back, was unable to compete with his club-mates, admitting: “I don’t have any.”

The title of the thread speaks volumes. Our Spanish players English is just fine, but to be fair we do a lot more than enrol them on a language course at college.

Do you invite them to your caravans for English dinner and teach them English words whilst shifting pegs? :malky:
