" DANISH STARS TO MEET-UP IN PEMIER LEAGUE "

Centre-forward Cornelius is still awaiting his full debut in the top flight for Cardiff, while Eriksen has played only 71 minutes football for Spurs.

Danish pals Andreas Cornelius and Christian Eriksen will meet up this week and have a chat about their hopes for this Premier League season.

Both are new to football in Britain and each has the talent to enjoy big success with their new clubs.

Centre-forward Cornelius is still awaiting his full debut in the top flight for Cardiff, while Eriksen has played only 71 minutes football for Spurs.

They have played together for Denmark and it cost £20m to bring them to the Premier League.

Cardiff paid £8.5m to FC Copenhagen for attacking sensation Cornelius, while Eriksen cost Spurs £11.5m when he made the move from Ajax.

The two Great Danes are a year apart in age – Eriksen is the older at 21 – and came through the various internationals from under-18 upwards.

Eriksen has a rare ability to link play between midfield and attack, while Cornelius is a powerful centre-forward decent with the ball at his feet and strong in the air.

The big number nine scored with a stunning header at Forest Green in pre-season, but has had little chance to shine in league or cup, having gone on in the last minute against Manchester City and started at Accrington only to be forced off by a recurrence of his ankle injury. He is back in training after an ankle injury, but has no chance of being involved against Spurs and Eriksen on Sunday.

Cornelius, though, remains relaxed as he regains fitness and manager Malky Mackay isn’t worried that injury has curtailed his playing time so far.

“Andreas is going to be a Cardiff City player for a long time and will play when he is fit and ready,” says the Bluebirds manager.

Cornelius himself says: “The price is a motivation for me.

“If Cardiff want to pay that amount of money for me then I must be good and they must believe that I’m good.”

Scouts from top clubs queued up to watch Cornelius and Eriksen when they played together for Denmark – Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Athletico Madrid among 31 leading clubs, nine of them from the English league, represented at one World Cup qualifier.

Malky Mackay won the chase for Cornelius and brought him to South Wales, while the influence of Daniel Levy and Franco Baldini was crucial when Eriksen chose Tottenham.

Cornelius was Cardiff’s first signing of the close season – they eventually brought in eight new players – while Eriksen was the seventh and final signing of a busy summer for the north London club.

Chairman Levy and technical director Baldini flew to Amsterdam to negotiate with Ajax and the move paid off.

“I talked a little bit with the manager (Andre Vilas Boas), but I had more to do with the chairman and technical director,” said Eriksen. “They were they guys who really had the right words,” Eriksen said.

“The first contact was with my agent and then my agent talked to me and I said, ‘Go on, I really want to hear what they have got to say.’

“The day after my agent was (in London) to look around and see everything and talk with the big men, then the day after, they all went to Amsterdam to negotiate with Ajax.

“The next day, I was here for a medical. It went really quick. Just four days.

“It really impressed me that they wanted it so badly and wanted to do it so quickly.

“Spurs want to be in the Champions League next season, for sure, and then we have, of course, to become champions.”

Cornelius and Cardiff have their targets, too, and they are, by necessity, a little lower.

Mackay’s men are intent on finishing this season out of relegation problems and as high as they can manage in a first season of top flight football.

The signs so far, for both Cardiff and Spurs, are good.

The Bluebirds have earned five points from their last three fixtures and this Sunday test themselves against a Tottenham team who lie third with nine points from four matches.

It’s another test of skill and character for Mackay and his player.

There is the piece about him for Sunday. :ayatollah:
