I don't think the England fans are deluded - it's always a case of the media machine hyping their players up and knocking them down when they don't score against average teams.

I think the English fans are used to the rise and fall nature of their national team's fortunes - to be honest, the last World Cup was an eye opener for a lot of them. They've got just as many fans who've turned their backs on international football as we have...

Yeah, I'd say England fans are even more pessimistic than we are about our own team right now!

I think it's the media who are the deluded ones.

Media play England up, I have a good 700 on my timeline on Twitter who are not hopefuls, none of them.

I do think England are really quite a poor team and totally over-rated by their fans, although the Premier League may be one of the Worlds best the English players are not!

England have some incredible individuals but massively underachieve as a team and nation footballing wise. I agree about media, the amount they over hype their own team and youngsters is ridiculous, they make out its their god given right to qualify and reach the knock out stages of any tourny.

I've not been deluded for about 15 years now. It's the media that seem to translate excitement and pride into divine expectation.

I haven't met an English fan who thought we could get to the final let alone win it since 1990. It's a mystery why those in the media think a bit of moaning or even a lot means we think we can compete with the top 20 countries. We don't!

It's the pundits that are deluded or seriously detached from ordinary supporters, but then they would be, not mixing with fans anymore in their blacked out range rovers and expensive restaurants, kids at private schools etc. I don't blame them, must be hard to empathize with people who earn less in a year than they did in a week.

true.90 we did better than expected and were unlucky.94 we didnt qualify .96 with t.v we again perhaps were a bit unlucky to lose to germany but lets be honest we were lucky to get past spain.98 was prob the last time i thought we,d do well.since then it,s been just dont show us up.2010 being the lowpoint for me.tbh i don,t take much notice these days.i just watch the major tounements and that,s it.im ok with woy.roy will make us hard to beat but the whole system needs over hauling.maybe a wenger or hoddle to oversee the whole set up.the media over hype us.thing is i dont know any lads who buy into it anymore.it won,t get any better any time soon.we have players now who are not first team players every week for their clubs.some players are regulars but not for a champions league side.in years gone by when a player turned up for england duty he was playing with the best of the best he could play with .now we have fellows playing at club level with players who are far better than the players they will play with for england.the media can chuck as glitz at it as they like.most of us know you cannot polish a turd.i know were we,re at.that,s why i was pleased we didnt lose the other night.
