CARDIFF CITY stopper David Marshall could miss only his second League match in three seasons when Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds go to Hull tomorrow.

Marshall injured his hip playing for Scotland in Macedonia on Tuesday and will be assessed by Cardiff’s medics this morning.

Joe Lewis is in line to make his Premier League debut if Marshall is ruled out, a City spokesman saying: “It’s too early for a decision. We’ll see how David is on Friday morning.”

The loss of Marshall would be a huge blow to the Bluebirds, for he was outstanding during Cardiff’s title-winning Championship season and has also shone so far against West Ham, Manchester City and Everton.

The only League match he has missed on Malky Mackay’s watch was against Crystal Palace during the 2011-12 season, when Tom Heaton deputised and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 home win.

Lewis, 25, is ready to make his League debut for Cardiff, having been restricted to only three cup appearances during his first year with the club.

New signing Peter Odemwingie is fit and looks set to be among the substitutes, while Steven Caulker has recovered from a minor ankle problem and was among England’s substitutes in Ukraine this week.

" LATEST ON DAVID MARSHALL INJURY "

Wednesday 11th September 2013

Cardiff City are anxiously waiting for news on a hip injury sustained by goalkeeper David Marshall whilst on International duty with Scotland last night. Marshall had to be replaced during the win over Macedonia, with Matthew Gilks taking over between the posts.

Of all the Cardiff City squad, David Marshall is the one player we cannot afford an injury to. The likes of Medel, Caulker, Kim and Campbell are all vital players for the Bluebirds - but in each of those positions there are quality replacements waiting for a chance. However, when it comes to the goalkeeping department, we have only free transfer fringe player Joe Lewis and the untried new arrival Simon Moore to call upon.

Lewis is established as City`s number two, but was somewhat of a panic signing when Tom Heaton decided he could not afford to start another season as number two to Marshall. We wanted to keep Heaton, but after he moved to Bristol City - we were forced to bring in cover, though Lewis has barely featured and has been far from convincing in his sporadic cup appearances.

City will be desperately hoping the injury to Marshall is minor, and that he will be fit to take the number one jersey come Saturday for what will be a key clash with Hull City. It is difficult to underestimate Marshall`s importance to the squad, and he has once again been in fine form even at this early stage of the season. Fingers crossed it`s just a bruise.

Unsure what he's done because he had very little to do in the first 45.

I'd hope that Moore would be put in. Lewis is shit.

Yep, time for Moore to show why David James said he could be a future England keeper if Marshall's injury is serious.

Seriously bad news. If our best player is out, we are in trouble - even if we are only playing Hull next.

I've not seen Moore but I don't think he has been on the bench in the prem so assume Lewis would get the nod.

No loan market for the Prem teams

I'll have nightmares tonight about Joe Lewis being in goal for us.

We can have an "emergency loan" for a keeper with the PL's permission. If DM is out for a couple of months I think, not sure of the exact rule, and back up keeper is youth or development then we can a keeper in. Only position it applies to. Neil Alexander perhaps?

Can get a free agent in I think considering West Ham signed Petric

We can get a keeper in. I remember Chelsea losing Cudicini and Cech and were allowed to bring in some Swedish keeper. It's probably nothing hopefully, but if it does mean something then put Moore in

Lee camp is unattached isn't he?

Oh dear, fingers crossed its nothing bad! Re-iterated why we need him with that save vs Everton. Saved us so many points last year and could save us a lot more this year, keeping us up

I believe that's at the discretion of the FAW, we have two fit keepers so no need to change the rules for us.

You can only get a free agent in if you don't have a FULL 25 man squad named. Our only hope is PL permission for an emergency add to the squad.

We can't have any loans as we already have two fit keepers for backup and no we can't sign free transfers as stated above we have filled out 25 man allocation

Time for Joe Lewis to step up and claim the No 1 jersey as his. So a perfect opportunity for him to dislodge Marshall from the starting XI.

Re: Updated " David Marshall (Not good) "

I don't know why Joe Lewis has been written off with such conviction. He has made the bench for the full England squad in the past. He is a better keeper than he has been given credit for. I'm sure Malky is prepared for this situation, so either Lewis or Moore will be good enough to step in without look at the loan market.

Lee Camp is a very good keeper but has signed for WBA.

Could be a blessing in disguise as the competition for the no.1 spot will be rife from Lewis and Moore. If one of them hits some decent form then we could find we have a decent choice in keepers!

I got a sneaky feeling that Moore could step up to the plate and show what a good bit of business it was signing him :D

Any idea how long?

Very nervous considering Marshall has always been the man who has won us games on times but I will back Lewis or Moore to take advantage and do well.
