' Cardiff City reveals latest moves to increase Cardiff City Stadium's capacity '

Last season 26,828 Capacity
Today it is 27,500
Summer 2014 33,000

Cardiff City Football Club can reveal.

9th Sep 2013

Three-fold works have included increasing seating, making changes to its media facilities and shifting some rooms in commercial and marketable space.

Extra seating is being installed at the Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff City is installing extra seating in the Cardiff City Stadium to take its capacity to more than 27,500 by the time Tottenham visit a week on Sunday.

The club is in the process of filling in the corner of the ground between the Grandstand and Canton Stand with between 220 and 240 permanent seats.

It comes after the club has already installed 650 seats this summer by adding an extra row and converting disabled areas – works which have gone so smoothly, they have hardly been seen by fans.

Cardiff City Stadium manager Wayne Nash said: “The best compliment we can pay really is people haven’t noticed.

“We have put an extra row in and taken two of the disabled areas out and converted them to seating and built another disabled platform in another place.

“The current work is slightly more visible because it’s in a corner we haven’t used previously.”

Mr Nash said at the end of last season, the club’s ground had a 26,800 capacity.

But that will be more than 27,500 for the Bluebirds’ next home game with Tottenham.

As part of three-fold works over the summer, the club also made changes to its TV gantry, interview rooms and press and media facilities, as stipulated by the Premier League.

And it has transferred some rooms into commercial and marketable space.

“The third element was trying to squeeze as many seats as we can within the stadium’s existing configuration,” Mr Nash said.

It comes as images of plans to eventually extend the stadium – due to host Wales’ World Cup qualifier with Serbia on Tuesday night – to 33,000 by next summer were revealed by the club.

Pictures of phase one of the development on the Ninian Park Stand were posted by the club on Twitter.

If it goes ahead, the development will further extend capacity by 5,150 seats.

Plans will go before Cardiff Council this month and propose a steel frame structure is built behind the current stand during this season, with the roof removed in stages from October before the new tier is added from late May.

In the application, Jessica Jones, of consultants Arup, writes: “The time available for construction is extremely limited given that CCFC are holding their first competitive fixture in early August 2014.

“When considering that a number of ramp-up events will need to be undertaken in preparation for this, the earliest completion date has been targeted for July 18-25, 2014.”

They're just clutching at straws

It's not our fault if people pay for seats then don't go!

I hope that the council will be a bit more helpful than Rodney Berman's Lib Dem/Plaid lot. They forced us to share with the unmissed egg-chasers.

Sounds good progress, though :ayatollah:

Surely priority to move should go to existing ninian first if it is likely to result in a drenching for those who purchased season tickets in the "dry " zone

Correct they do have priority on seats in the upper stand.

What is a "gold member"?

I have a season ticket, so is this gold member status?

Season ticket holders will be given the chance to relocate to available areas in the stadium first including the new stand like every year when they have the chance to renew there tickets in February , further added season tickets will then go on sale to gold members in the membership scheme before going on general sale .

I was wondering this. I thought the next stage was adding the second tier increasing the attendance by 5k next spring. Tell us Annis?

Yes the next major stage is that, but thanks to people down our club, they have managed to find areas they can use without major work, which will bring our Capacity up to 28,000 very soon
Then the major work will start in the middle of October eventually bringing our capacity to 33,000 ready for next season

Only one corner being left empty and extra seats are daily being added, thanks to people down our club going over and over the stadium looking for areas and then health and Safety have allowed the Club to put them in.

With work starting in October, will this affect attendance? People's seats having to replaced due to construction? Or can they carry out work without it affecting capacity?
