Wales boss Chris Coleman insists he's equipped to handle Gareth Bale 'circus'
9th Sep 2013.
National team comes under global spotlight after star's move to Real Madrid - but manager insists he can cope with the hype
Gareth Bale has been the focus of attention since arriving in the Wales camp
Chris Coleman has insisted he can handle the circus that now comes with Gareth Bale – and claimed he’s worth the distraction as the world waits to see if he will play the Real Madrid mega-star against Serbia tomorrow.
The national team has been dragged into the global spotlight over the past week after Bale turned up for international duty less than 24 hours after becoming the world’s most expensive player.
It has forced manager Coleman to deal with the added attention and scrutiny over the player, including the decision to name him as a substitute and then not use him despite going down to a 2-1 defeat in Macedonia on Friday.
Coleman later claimed it was an attempt at mind games and that Bale was never fit to play, despite previous suggestions that he could be used as a late replacement.
Bale – who has played a solitary pre-season fixture all summer but was last week outlining his desire to appear for his country – will not start at Cardiff City Stadium tomorrow, Coleman again stressing he will not play him for any length of time if it risks sending the player back to the Bernabeu unfit.
The mixed messages have made for an awkward few days for Coleman, especially following the embarrassment of not being with the team on the eve of a game after losing his passport.
But as far as Bale is concerned, Coleman admits being able to call upon his match-winning talent makes all the extra scrutiny worth it.
“There will always be a distraction for a club of that size and the circus that comes with it – but I’d rather have that distraction,” said the under-fire boss.
“There are a lot of positives surrounding us, one or two negatives but forget that, I don’t care about that. I can see where we are going. I can see the potential when everyone is ready. We are on the right road.
“I accept what is coming with Baley because he’s a super player – a match-winner.
“We have to accept what’s coming when he’s with us. The important thing is that we can’t let people use it as a tool against us. It will happen and I understand the pressures that will come with that, but I’d rather have it than not have it.”
Coleman reiterated that he would not gamble over Bale against Serbia and it is unclear just what chance the 24-year-old has of featuring.
Team-mates had said – publicly at least – he had trained normally in the build-up to the game and assistant manager Kit Symons had spoken in Coleman’s pre-game absence in Skopje about how he was fit for selection.
Coleman then said he had spoken to Bale before the game and they together decided he was not ready even for a 10-minute appearance.
And Bale’s genteel warm-up at the Philip II Arena showed he was not to be considered despite the attempt at a ruse, while he intriguingly appeared to use only his right foot during it.
The Football Association of Wales, however, will be hopeful Bale could play in order to boost ticket sales after a testing few days.
But Coleman stressed in Skopje: “In the long run it’s good, people want to come and watch him play and come and support us. What’s wrong with that?
“But he can’t play if he’s not fit. I never said he was definitely going to play (in Macedonia).
“If he’s fit I said he could play a part. It’s great people have come from Wales to support us (in Skopje) but they do anyway.
“We’ve always had good support. You can’t point the finger at me saying I’ve conned the fans saying he might play.
“If there was a chance, we would. If there wasn’t we can’t take the risk.”
Continuing on the circus theme, Coleman went on: “We’re looked at as a small football nation but producing someone like him is something to be proud of and more people will know about us.
“One or two people will bang us on the head with that and the circus will arrive, but I’ll take that because we have a player of that magnitude.
“When you’ve got Bale, Bellamy, Allen, Ramsey, Jonny Williams... if we can get them all on the pitch together, we’ve got good enough players elsewhere to be a good team.
“But we can’t get them on the same pitch, not in two years and that’s the frustration.”
Coleman’s bemoaning of player availability is not new for a Wales manager but the problems are at least genuine, certainly ahead of the visit of Serbia – a side who look set to take the third place Wales had aimed for should they win in Cardiff tomorrow.
Captain Ashley Williams is suspended, while injuries to Sam Ricketts and the impressive Jonny Williams look to have added them to an injury list already including Joe Allen and Neil Taylor as well as – we are told – Bale.
Hal Robson-Kanu is available again after serving a one-match suspension, but Coleman will be forced to turn back to James Collins to plug a centre-back crisis.
Collins was left out of the squad having withdrawn from the last meet-up citing injury, only to play for West Ham just days after the 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland.
Yet he could now be reunited with his former club colleague Danny Gabbidon.
“The door was always open for James,” said Coleman.
“But he wasn’t going to replace Sam and certainly not Ashley, while Danny has been doing great for Crystal Palace – and they were there for the Ireland game.
“They haven’t done anything wrong not to be there but now we have one or two injuries. It’s one area we need to look at.”

I HATE the way he always uses nicknames to refer to the players, 'Baley', 'Rambo', 'Bellers' etc. Totally smacks of unprofessionalism. You're their manager, STOP trying to be their mate, no one thinks you're cool because you know Gareth Bale and call him 'Baley'.

Ooooh whats he gonna do this time. Put him on the bench against Serbia disguised as a clown then he will rip off his outfit, take off his make up and warm up. SURPROIIIIISE. Hopefully scare the Serbs half to death so they change their tactics and go all defensive as Baley is warming up.
Then he wont put him on as he doesnt want to upset Real Madrid
