" NICKY MAYNARD INTERVIEW "

Cardiff City star Nicky Maynard:
'We don't want Swansea City throwing their weight around any more than they have done. "

7th Sep 2013

Former Swans idol Lee Trundle has told good friend Maynard that nothing will prepare him for the passionate roar of the derby crowd

Cardiff City striker Nicky Maynard has been warned about the rabid atmosphere of the south Wales derby – by ex-Swans idol Lee Trundle.

Maynard admits his experience of local dust-ups isn’t extensive, but he became friendly with Trundle when the pair were at Bristol City, and then bumped into his old pal on holiday this summer.

And Maynard was left in no doubt about what to expect when the Bluebirds meet Michael Laudrup’s men on November 3 at Cardiff City Stadium.

“Lee told me there is nothing that can prepare you for that atmosphere,” said Maynard. “Personally, I am excited by it. They will be special matches.

“You can either be worried by the abuse or thrive on it. I’ll love it, I’m sure.

“The biggest derby I've played in was for Crewe against Port Vale. I think Cardiff v Swansea will be a bit different.

“Cardiff is a big club in a big city with a huge fan base. We want to do the city proud.

“We don’t want Swansea throwing their weight around any more than they have done.”

Maynard has noted the dates for those South Wales derby matches against Swansea, with Cardiff due back at the Liberty Stadium on February 8.

The Bluebirds have six Premier League matches before that first derby clash – two at home, against Spurs and Newcastle, plus four away – and Maynard is hoping to have gained plenty more top flight experience before the Swans come to Cardiff.

The former West Ham striker was a substitute against his old club on the first day of the season, and almost snatched a goal in a late Upton Park cameo.

Maynard also came on in the second half of the 0-0 draw with Everton, but would appear to face a battle to win a regular starting spot.

Yet the man who missed most of the last season’s Championship promotion campaign because of a serious knee injury, is nothing if not confident in what he can bring to Cardiff’s Premier League bid.

Maynard thinks he can push current first choice Fraizer Campbell all the way

“I always believe I can score goals and my aim is make a strong personal claim for a League start,” he said.

“I didn’t kick a ball in Premier League football for West Ham and then when I signed for Cardiff a bad injury put me out for eight months.

“Now, honestly, I am so happy to be fit and playing again.”

“Fraizer Campbell has done exceptionally well, particularly with those goals against Manchester City, and has taken the chance to prove he deserved to start.

“We are competing for a place in the starting line-up. He wants to play in every Premier League match and I will do all I can to push him all the way.”

Maynard revealed that Craig Bellamy, one Bluebird with no shortage of Premier League experience, has made it clear what every Cardiff player must aspire to this season – consistency and taking chances to score when they present themselves.

“We want to consolidate as a Premier League team and earn as many points as possible,” added Maynard.

“If we get enough to finish higher up the table than survival then great.

“Craig Bellamy did a good job in telling us what to expect. It’s about consistency, it’s no good winning 1-0 one week and then losing 4-0 the next.

“One thing Craig talked about is the quality we will face. You can have all the possession for 90 minutes, but it’s about what happens in the penalty box which matters.

“It’s no good dominating if you don’t take your chances.

“We really want to make sure we are in the Premier League again for 2014-15.

Throwing their weight around :?:

The only context that the gypos have thrown their weight around would have been when fatty trundle won the annual South Wales belly wobbling competition in 2004

Has Trundle even played in a South wales derby ?

I don't think he has.

He left the Jacks when they got into the Championship.

Then when he came back he couldn't get in the side.

So what the hell does he know about it ?

I can't remember an occasion when he actually played against us in a jerk derby although I am sure there was match at NP when he was on the bench although there was not the slightest chance he would make it on to the pitch. I think he wore his brown shell suit bottoms that day.

A derby game is not just a normal game (Dave Jones mentality).

Form goes out of the window, its pride for the supporters (both sides) so if the players also realise this makes for exciting encounter.

Jones mentality indeed - I hate the way he used to play down and understate the derby, with the result that our players would go into it as if it was an evening stroll; then DJ would blame the fans for expecting too much when we lost, after his post match drink with their f*cking manager...

You'd get better advice from Wilson The Basketball rather than that fat useless failiure of a scouse waster that is Trundle.
