Police horses on the pitch at Ashton Gate after fans invaded the pitch following City's 2-1 win
TONIGHT'S Bristol derby match was marred by a pitch invasion and violence between supporters of City and Rovers.

The Johnstone's Paint Trophy first-round match - the first competitive meeting between the two sides for more than six years - ended in a 2-1 victory for City.

The final whistle at Ashton Gate was followed by a pitch invasion by a group of home fans - condemned as "disgraceful" by City manager Sean O'Driscoll.

Three police officers were injured and although only 12 arrests had been confirmed by 10.30pm, that figure is likely to rise as police look through CCTV recordings and video posted online from in and around the ground.

The officer in charge of policing the match criticised the "small minority of hooligans" who ruined the match for the majority of fans.

There were running battles outside the stadium, 20 minutes after the final whistle. A group of Rovers fans managed to break through the lines of riot police and confront City fans who were similarly intent on trouble.

For a couple of minutes the police struggled to contain the sheer numbers and pitched battles were fought in the car park of the KFC restaurant in Winterstoke Road before riot police went in to restore order.

Police then marched the City element away from the stadium up Winterstoke Road, with a dog unit standing by in case further trouble flared.

Further violence was reported near Greville Smyth Park, near the ground.

Police said that there had been a perfect build-up to the game with both sets of fans well-behaved and in good humour - but trouble first broke out as fans moved towards the stadium, with the first flashpoint outside the Miners Arms pub in Bedminster Down Road, where objects were thrown at a minibus containing Rovers fans.

There were flashpoints during the match itself, including a flare being let off in the Rovers end, before the final whistle brought a pitch invasion by City fans. Mounted police were brought in to help clear the pitch.

Asked about the invasion, City manager Sean O'Driscoll said: "I think it's disgraceful. We're in the second round of the JPT and it's almost like we've got promoted to the Championship.

"I can understand rivalry but not hostility.

"We've got police horses on the pitch, the poor groundsman is going to have a right job. So it doesn't help, it's just stupid."

Match commander Chief Superintendent Caroline Peters said: "The majority of fans were well behaved and enjoyed the match. However there was a small minority who came with the sole intention of trying to spoil the enjoyment for the majority.

“We warned before the match that we would not tolerate any form of anti-social behaviour or violence.

"We will now aim to bring the offenders to justice using CCTV coverage and other intellegence and information gathered tonight to bring the offenders to justice."

Video showing a mounted police officer striking out with a baton as a fan appears to raise their hand at the horse:

From before the match, footage of missiles being thrown at minibus carrying Rovers fans near the Miners Arms pub in Bedminster Down Road:

Sad pathetic yeah I agree, but when I think of scum I think of people who abuse children and things like that.
These are just guys who like a scrap,if you will. Surely fans like ours can understand and relate to such issues?.

Its broken out many times in that spot by the KFC car park when City have visited. Always a potential flashpoint.

Lets not take the houlier than thou attitude either if that was Cardiff / Swansea in a similair type of set-up it would go off just as bad, probably worse.

Due to the current set up of both Liberty and CCS it seriously limits any flashpoints but outside Ashton gate its pretty unavoidable if both sets of fans want it.

Personally i think some of our fans are being a tad bit hypocritical judging by comments aimed at these scenes.
I Remember how the media labelled the Leeds match as the worst scenes of violence at a match in years, yet i don't recall a punch being thrown.

Weren't Cardiff one of the first teams to use CCTV at games to try and reduce violence? Would have been back in the 70s in guessing.

Does make me laugh though, this site is full of ex hooligans, 10 or 20 years ago that might have been some people on this board.

Got to laugh at people calling them scum.

If they want to kick off at football its their choice, they know if they get caught their fucked anyway. As long as they don't attack shirters and have a fight with likeminded people leave them to it. :ayatollah

Now that Titty have dropped down to the lower leagues to join Rovers, we were all sure that we would see a return of what is known as Wurzel-On-Wurzel (WOW) violence. Trouble again flared earlier today at Wookey Hole, where Rovers fans attacked City by throwing rocket-propelled pitchforks whilst Titty responded by driving at them in their race-prepared combine-harvesters. At one stage a supporter appeared to have had his head completely severed but police later confirmed from the Crowman that Aunt Sally was simply just washing the hair of a Mr W. Gummidge. When questioned about the events of last night, a Bristol City Fans Association spokesman said "Oi carnt reed, and Oi carnt rite, but Oi carn droive a tracturr".
