Fed Up with Bitching at Wales games

Wed Sep 04, 2013 1:29 pm

Who is bigger who has had the most success in recent years Blah Blah Blah.

Wales has two premier League sides and Wales national team is very poorly supported, why? because of the stupid rivalry that Swansea and Cardiff have. I am fed up with seeing club football shirts at international games, we are one country.
Fair enough on derby days etc Banter is great but if we are ever to get behind Wales it should be as one.

End of Rant

its not the only reason though, perhaps as well because the Welsh team is so poor?

What a ridiculous notion!

If the FAW did some decent ticket offers etc, there would be many more fans.

Completely agree that we all be behind the national squad. I've watched Wales for years and going back for a good period before Gary Speed (RIP), the performances were so lacklustre it was painful to watch. I never ever leave a game till after the final whistle but some of those games were like an endurance test. That changed after the Monte Negro win at CCS which was a revelation to watch. I also think that the FAW have dropped so many bollocks over the years, a few fans I know won't go, especially on the back of the England ticket debacle which saw many long-term fans unable to get a ticket. They also need to have discounted schemes to get kids in cheaply too which they could offer to parks clubs and schools. I'll be there in any case.

If you think that Cardiff Swansea rivalry is the reason that lots fans have stopped supporting Wales, then you obviously don't go.

I don't go because Im Cardiffian through and through and not Welsh.

I'm Cardiffian and British.

They can label me Welsh if they like and put it in my passport but I won't accept their rebranding of my nationality.

I'll always be a Cardiffian at heart.

From what I've seen at Wales games, there is no Cardiff-Swansea rivalry at Wales games. That's because very few jacks actually go!

20 pound a ticket it was for Wales vs Ireland for an adult? To see Wales reserves vs Ireland reserves. Silly as f**k, can't even pack the CCS or Liberty, only for rivalry matches against Scotland etc. Absolute joke, lower the prices, get the FAW off their arse and promoting the games then more people will go. WRU advertise the hell out of their games, in return they get a packed out Millennium

Stupid reason innit, i suppose Swansea and Cardiff ceased to exist prior to Hughes' reign when we were the (or one of) most supported teams in Europe at the time with 70,000 crowds consistently at the Mil Stad?? Shit performances up until Speedo followed and in conjunction with abysmal advertising and marketing have led to a decline in attendances. However the Scotland game at home recently was the best i'd been to in years, but was quickly followed by shit arse crowds again, its so hit and miss im scared to go atm.
Hopefully with people now wanting to see Bale and us both in the Prem along with decent performances and a stron finish to this group will bring it back around.

Just what I was thinking. Both Cardiff and Swansea were in the lower division during the Mark Hughes era when 70k were turning up regularly to see Wales and before that 38k were @ the old Arms Park for Terry Yorath's boys in the early 90's.

The reason the numbers turned up was a the same as any other football side, they were winning games even if they failed right at the death.

If Wales want the crowds they have to start winning.

Agree , the prices are to high for the standard of football on offer (Especially now that our qualification is all but over)

I stopped going to games in Cardiff as it just wasnt worth the hassle but go to wales games at the liberty. Had a guts full of telling pricks to shut the f**k up when they were booing their captain. The booing of ben davies of all people a welsh speaker even took it to new depths.

I've seen similar stuff at the liberty, not that you'd mention that of course...

jackf works both ways . went down to the vetch a few times in the 80's following Wales and had to endure a load of nonsense from your lot too most notibly the game when the flood lights failed

also used to happen when i went down to swansea to watch glammy cricket too !

hopefully times are changing now when we follow Wales

Spain made a big fan fair about being 'one Spain'. three tournaments ago. They have won every tournament since. Good post.

We could have an extremely exciting generation coming through soon. What is also exciting is that the age groups will be young and of similar age so the talent pool should get bigger over the next few seasons.

In regard to youth we have Jonny Williams, Adam Matthews, Ben Davies, Emyr Huws, Lloyd Isgrove, Declan John, Paul Dummett, Elliot Hewitt, Lloyd Jones (Hopefully he stays with Wales!!), Danny Ward, Chris Dawson, Tom Lawrence etc etc. There are also lots of other hype players at really good status one academies - Everton, Liverpool, Fulham and Wolves have a lot of young Welsh talent in their ranks who will come to the fore over the next couple of years.Of course there's us and Swansea too who are continually improving at producing Welsh talent.

Wales are lacking in key positions though - Goalies, centre backs and strikers. Hopefully one or two will come good. Strange that we are producing an abundance of left backs though. Hopefully they'll all turn out like Bale then we will be sorted.

KEPPERS. We need a keepers who are playing regular footie in top leagues. Apparantly Darlow at Forest is illegible, he seems a talent. Jonathan Bond at Watford has turned his back on us after using our U21s to better his career. I'm hoping Hennessy gets back to good health and form. Hopefully Danny Ward turns out to be a top level keeper and hopefully he gets a loan this season.

CENTRE HALVES. I think we nees Ashley Williams to play on as long as he can. He is integral to the way Wales need to play. He is a good athlete so hopefully he wants to play into his thirties. But we need a young partner for him as I don't see who that might be. Gunter as centre half? It's all a bit thin on the ground. Lloyd Jones at Liverpool is one of the most hyped 17 year olds in British football. He is a Plymouth born CB now at Liverpool who has played for our u17s. I think it's touch and go whether he will play for us. AS soon as this lad plays a pro game, whether that be on loan or for Liverpool I would like to see him called up to the A squad and hope he accepts.

I can see Matthews, Joniesta and Isgrove coming good on the wings in the future which would leave us to chuck the most expensive player in the World to play 'fake 9'...

If we kick off the next campaign well, we will stand a great chance I believe especially as the Euros expands from 16 to 24 teams who qualify. If we get a sniff, we'll be back in the Mill Stad once again...

Good post but also remember Wrexham deserve some credit they have sold many of the Welsh youngsters t premiership teams in the last few seasons in order t fund the academy.

I think the keeper Darlow refused the offer of a call-up

We are in desperate need of a striker from somewhere

Thanks for actually reading all that!!

Wrexham are fast becoming my 'second' team. Interesting that you highlight the striker problem in the same post. Wrexham have just sold one of the brightest prospects they have ever had - 17 year old Bradley Reid went to Wolves for 200k on deadline day. I've been going onto the Wrexham forum to see what they have to say about him and they are sure he is destined for the top. Reid himself is a 6ft 2" target man, who from the sounds of things is far along in terms of his footballing education.

Wrexham also have a young Welsh defender (Centre back!) called Tomassen is is rated by them. They have also produced youngsters who have been poached by Liverpool and Everton academies. Taylor came from there and has been a great success at Swansea.

So Wolves now have three young Welsh strikers which is exciting. Them dropping down to league one is a good thing as it means they are more likely to play. They also have Lee Evans, a 19 year old centre mid, who is a regular starter now. I think having two Welshman manage Wolves back to back is good for us and good for them. But I'm kind of hoping they don't get promoted so these Welshies have more chance of coming through. They will go up though.
