Gary Medel is one of the best signings Cardiff City will ever make, says Malky Mackay
4th Sep 2013

The Chilean midfielder was a club record buy for Cardiff City and manager Malky Mackay says he could become a legend at Cardiff City

Malky Mackay has told how he rates Chilean midfield terrier Gary Medel ‘one of the best signings Cardiff City will ever make’.

The Bluebirds manager underlined how highly he rates Medel after the man from Santiago produced a masterclass during Cardiff’s goalless Premier League draw against Everton following on from impressive displays against West Ham and Manchester City.

Medel has now joined up with Chile’s squad for their World Cup qualifier against Venezuela on Friday, but such is the impression he has made in his short time in Cardiff, that Mackay was moved to offer high praise.

“He is one of the best signings this club will ever make,” said the City boss

“I don’t think that’s over dramatic.

“He has been two minutes in the door, a Spanish speaker with limited English and yet he has taken to our club like a duck to water. There is a confidence about him – an aura which underlines he deserves to be playing Premier League football.

“He is a natural leader and as his English gets better he will develop even more. He settled immediately and gained immediate respect from all players.”

City fitness coach Martyn Pert speaks Spanish and has been helping Medel communicate with Mackay, who added: “Gary is booked in for English lessons and will, like Kim Bo-Kyung, make progress with that.

“Gary will improve. I have told him I believe there is more improvement to come and we will do everything possible to help him.

“He has enjoyed being in Cardiff, looking round the city, being at the training ground and our stadium. Gary is loving every minute of it.

“He is a top, top Chilean international who is going to the World Cup.”

Medel’s Chile are on the verge of qualifying for the finals in Brazil next year – Kim’s South Korea have already made sure of their place – and he is likely to play for his country twice during the current international break.

Chile have three World Cup qualifiers still to play and the first of those is against Venezuela in Santiago on Friday, while the squad then fly back to Europe where they have a match against Spain in Geneva next Tuesday.

As much as people moan about foreign players in the PL - we should have respect for these guys as it's a huge move and challenge for them to re-locate and learn the language... Whenever the English media go on about the lack of English players in the PL then I can't help but think why don't some English players go abroad for a couple of years?

Vincent Tan is the best signing we'll ever make as without him we wouldn't have Malky or Medel and we would not be in the EPL.

Plenty of Brits just don't want to relocate plus we overall as a nation don't travel well. Others have to as they want the money to better their lives overall and with the strong currency here its easy to see why the travelling here occurs more.

Im going the other way myself. I'll get a job abroad in a country where I can have enough to rent a place and enjoy myself. Im not going to be part of the rat race in this country trying to get on the property market and so on. I don't believe it to be a necessity to be honest and more of a want.

Soon enough I'll no longer be living so I'll be investing all that time and effort into something I'll rarely enjoy and have little time to enjoy. I'll just enjoy my life whilst I have it. Far too many people give in to the capitalist way of things and money dictates their life far more than they realise.

A music promoter mate of mine has a contract with a limo company who look after VIP's in Cardiff. The other day he drove Platini back and fore the Celtic Manor

He recently took Gary Medel and a couple of Cardiff reps to view some properties in the Vale. By the end of the journey, Medel informed his interpreter that he didn't want to live on the outskirts and wanted to be closer to the city centre where he can live among the people of Cardiff and enjoy the city :D

Expect to see El Pitbull catching some rays on Mill Lane soon.

He's going to be as loved as Kavanagh I reckon, but on a bigger scale as we have more fans now. :ayatollah:

What's brilliant about El Pitbul is the way he allows other people to player better. This is what a 'water carrier' is all about and we have never in the history of this club had one this good. Any of the back four can bomb upfield because Gary will just drop back and sit in to cover. Any player is free to look for space because we have a player whose forte it is to sit back and hold the fort. When we have looked poor over the years it's always because we have lacked movement. The more our squad plays with Gary the more they will feel the freedom to find space. I'm looking forward to seeing Talyor, Brayford and Cathy get a license to overlap - a team that has marauding full backs is often the difference between a top half or bottom half side. I think Whitts is going to have the best season of his career too because of Medel.
