Use an egg cup and put enough in so you can see the level just below the door. Can't believe you didn't know that.

You just use a jug to fill the drum up before you put the clothes in mate, about 3 pints should do it.

you could try connecting it to the taps with some rubber pipes... Just a thought like.

Seriously though when I first moved out I just used to dump clothes on the floor and once a week somehow they all appeared in a washing basket, cleaned and ironed!!! I still don't know how, I gave my mum a key so she could pop in and check it out now and then, you know, to see if I had a cleaning ghost or something.
