Cardiff aim to beat rivals in bid for Odemwingie

Mon Sep 02, 2013 5:09 am

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay is looking to swell his Premier League squad with one more player before tonight’s transfer window closes.

The Bluebirds manager has until 11pm to finalise his plans, with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie believed to be his main target.

Mackay signed two defenders in two days – Kevin Theophile-Catherine and Maxi Amondarain – but said: “I want to bring in one more creative player to the group.”

He would not reveal who that man is, but Odemwingie is still keen to move from West Brom and there is no doubt Cardiff would like to snap him up.

Cardiff are locked in a three-way battle with arch-rivals Swansea and Stoke to land the winger.

Mackay, Michael Laudrup and Mark Hughes have each lodged bids of around £2m for Odemwingie, with Fulham, West Ham and Crystal Palace also keen.

West Brom have been holding out for a higher fee, but Odemwingie looks certain to leave the Hawthorns and last night it looked as if Cardiff were clear favourites.

If Mackay gets his man, it will make it a hat-trick of signings after he snapped up French under-21 player Theophile-Catherine from Rennes and Uruguayan under-20 cap Amondarain.

City paid around £2million Euros for 23-year-old full-back Theophile-Catherine, who signed a four-year contract after completing his medical on Saturday and then watched the 0-0 draw against Everton.

“The atmosphere was fantastic and it was good to watch the team,” said Theophile-Catherine.

“I can’t wait to play for Cardiff. Premier League football has been a dream for me since I was young.”

Mackay is delighted with his capture, saying: “We have been tracking Kevin for nine months. He is athletic, can play anywhere across the back four and is a leader.”

Amondarain, 20, goes into Cardiff’s development team and may be involved in manager Kevin Cooper’s group when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park tomorrow.

He has joined Cardiff from CA Progreso, in Montevideo, while he was in Uruguay’s squad who finished runners-up to France during the World under-20 Cup in Turkey.

There are unlikely to be any players sold by Cardiff today, but Etien Velikonja and Filip Kiss are among those who could go out on loan next week.

Steve Clarke admits it's “50-50” whether Peter Odemwingie will leave West Brom at all before the window slams shut.

Albion boss Clarke claimed to be in the dark as to whether the Swans side who had just beaten his men at The Hawthorns had made any further headway in a deal for the 32-year-old.

And he insisted it was not down to him as to whether there would be a compromise over the fee with the Swans and West Brom believed to be at odds over the price for the striker.

“I've no idea in terms of Swansea – deals are for the chairman and the chief executive” said Clarke, before going on to state that it would be 50-50 if the frozen-out Odemwingie left in the final hours of the transfer window.

Instead, Clarke is clearly more concerned at bringing in new faces to freshen up a Baggies side who failed to really test Swansea in the 2-0 win for Michael Laudrup's men.

Yet the Scot claimed there could have been a different outcome at The Hawthorns had James Morrison or Nicolas Anelka made the most of their two key first-half chances before Ben Davies and Pablo Hernandez stole the show for Swansea.

“We tried to play some good football and I thought it was a good passing game between two teams who play the game in the right way,” said Clarke, whose team are yet to score this term.

“But Swansea, on the day, had the greater cutting edge than we did. There were a couple of chances before 1-0 and if they go in it's a different game.

“But if you don't score you don't win games. We got in some good positions but we didn't show enough quality conviction.”

“The second goal killed the game off but that was a consequence of me trying to change things. We were chasing the game and tried to open the game up but Swansea are a good counter attacking team.”

If we have a genuine interest in Mcmanaman id keep PO on ice until 11pm, don't need both.

Id rather Lennon or McManaman over Odemwingie. Granted he'd be a good signing but rather someone younger who can be a feature for a couple of years.

Surprised we are going for him when he displayed his mercenary side last season in the QPR debacle. Wouldn't think he would fit into Malkys player profile at all.

May just be that he was doing what his agent advised him to do!

Apparently Swansea won meet WBA's valuation so unless they do it in the next couple of hours id be very surprised if hes not a Cardiff player by the end of the day.

It's not about the valuation, it's that we've blown Swansea out of the water with terms offered

I highly doubt thats the case. Hes not going to be on mega bucks is he, hes a 32 year old out of favour player. All the reports are suggesting Swansea wont meet the valuation. If its a case of us offering him stupid money then I think we ought to look at ourselves hard in the mirror and ask is this really the route we want to go down.

What route is that? From what I see we have bought young up and coming players as well as established one's,
He is older experienced striker just what we need! For all we know swans offered peanuts! Huw is tight bugger with his money ? (Sarcastic) before they crawl over this!

The Guardian

Peter Odemwingie could finally be leaving West Bromwich Albion, with Cardiff City the favourites to sign the forward.

Stoke City also retain an interest in the striker but Swansea City are thought to have baulked at West Brom's asking price of £4m for a 32-year-old out of contract next summer. Cardiff are still to agree a price with the club.

Last January Odemwingie believed he was going to join Queens Park Rangers, famously driving to the west London's club Loftus Road ground on deadline day to close the deal.

The move was described by Steve Clarke, West Brom's manager, as "total lunacy". Odemwingie was subsequently fined £75,000, did not play for the club again until 23 February and has made only seven appearances in total since the incident. He has not been selected by Clarke this season.

Just the route of offering silly money to players just to beat other teams rather than in accordance to their talent.. I dont think this is the case though, its just we have matched the valuation and Swansea dont feel hes worth that. Apparently Swansea pulled out because WBA upped what they wanted from £2.5m to £4m. Im sure all will come clear soon.

Peter Odemwingie just confirmed to talk sport reporter that he on his way to Cardiff and unlike his last little jaunt down south there is a deal in place, and the jist is I think they both had a little chuckle. Ha ha

More bollocks Roathie. We're paying around 2.5m ourselves. We both had offers accepted, but he's chosen Cardiff over Swansea. Simple

I would say it's 100 to 1 on that Agent Dummy will be back on this board just as soon as he wakes up which will be soon after 9 tonight, or even earlier if he's set an early alarm.
