Extra policing had been brought in for the game between Port Vale and Wolves
Police were pelted with missiles and made 23 arrests after a disturbance broke out following a football match.

Staffordshire Police said a "minority of fans" confronted each other after a League One fixture between Port Vale and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The force said officers were "confronted by a significant group" of "violent" Port Vale fans.

Missiles and bottles were thrown at officers and a marked police car was vandalised.

Two adults suffered dog bites from police dog units and were treated by paramedics, according to the force.

Those arrested included nine people detained before kick-off. Another four were arrested during the match for offences including going on to the pitch and setting off flares.

Police said they were "disappointed" a "significant number" of fans had decided to cause trouble at the fixture, despite significant preparations between club officials and officers that were aimed at preventing trouble.

Staffordshire Police said fans from both sides had been involved but praised a group of Wolves fans who "co-operated with police by waiting in the away coach park while police worked to clear the area".

'Significant minority'
"We are disappointed by the actions of this significant number of so-called fans who attended today's fixture intent on becoming involved in disorder," said Ch Insp Dave Bird, of Staffordshire Police.

He added: "All those arrested will be questioned about their actions and CCTV evidence from today will be examined by officers.

"The behaviour of this significant minority doesn't represent the club or our city."

Meanwhile, Bill Lodey - Port Vale club secretary, said: "The club are bitterly disappointed regarding the violence that has been reported in Burslem town centre.

"We will fully support any actions taken by the police in apprehending those responsible and they can expect severe penalties."

Police have arrested 23 people after violence broke out between rival football fans in Staffordshire.

Officers were pelted with bottles and missiles following a highly-charged local derby match between Port Vale and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

They said two adults were treated for dog bites after police dog units were used to quell the trouble.

Staffordshire Police said they were "confronted by a significant group of home fans" involved in "violent disorder" who had gone out of their way to target police lines.

The force is now scouring CCTV from the day's League One fixture, which away side Wolves won 3 - 1, in a bid to trace offenders.

Port Vale said it would fully back any police action against any of its fans involved.

After the final whistle, the trouble spilled over into nearby Burslem town centre in Stoke-on-Trent, where missiles were thrown at officers and a marked police car was smashed up.

There were reports innocent bystanders were also caught up in the melee.

Nine people were detained before kick-off while another four were arrested during the match for setting off flares and going onto the pitch.

Police said they were "disappointed" a "significant number" of fans had decided to cause trouble at the fixture despite lengthy preparation between club officials and officers aimed at preventing problems.

The force added fans from both sides had been involved but praised a group of Wolves fans who "co-operated with police by waiting in the away coach park while police worked to clear the area".

Chief Inspector Dave Bird, of Staffordshire Police, said: "We are disappointed by the actions of this significant number of so-called fans who attended today's fixture intent on becoming involved in disorder.

"All those arrested will be questioned about their actions and CCTV evidence from today will be examined by officers.

"The behaviour of this significant minority doesn't represent the club or our city.

"We will now continue to work with Port Vale to reduce the opportunity for future disorder."

Bill Lodey, Port Vale club secretary, said: "The club are bitterly disappointed regarding the violence that has been reported in Burslem town centre.

"We will fully support any actions taken by the police in apprehending those responsible and they can expect severe penalties."

Its usually how all the trouble starts, then the fans take a pasting for it.

To be fair just because 2 people get bitten by police dog it doesn't give other fans the right to start throwing missiles at the police and vandilising there cars. I would honestly not feel one bit of anger towards the dog or the police officer as that's what the dogs been trained to do so accidents will happen. Maybe it's just because I am an animal lover though having 2 dogs of my own

I think what he means Murphy is Cardiff have had it pretty easy going away with rival fans the last few seasons .In the Premier I think a lot of fans will be out to have it with Cardiff & the newer fans will take a few beatings as they won't know what's going on. Just my opinion though

Very true the fans shouldn't do that but the Police are there for crowd control and not to dish out summary justice via dog bites.

Letting the dog assault a member of the public is a serious lapse on behalf of the dog handler and if I was the fella who got bit I would make a formal complaint.

Even though football violence is still active in the lower leagues, it's as good as dead in the prem. some people were saying on here that Everton were going to be one of mobs out to get us yesterday. Cardiff and Everton lads were drinking alongside each other in town yesterday.

spot on xcasual thats what i ment. Cardiff and Everton may have been drinking together yesterday but that was no means there real lads or ours i assure you. Its not dead in the prem, its happens week in week out, spurs, chelsea, man u, man city, scousers. Its rife and its more orginised and violent that the lower leagues hence the reason cardiff's new bread of wannabe hooligans will be in for a shock if they go to the wrong places, not saying outside the grounds but away in city centres etc you will be suprised. Everton did come down and they got stopped on the way, there real lads anyway
