French right-back agrees Bluebirds deal

Cardiff City Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Kevin Théophile-Catherine from Rennes FC.

The former France U21 international has put pen to paper on a four year deal and becomes Malky Mackay's seventh summer acquisition.

Twenty-three Kevin, a right back who is comfortable at centre-half, completed his medical on Saturday morning ahead of the Bluebirds' Barclays Premier League fixture with Everton.

" Cardiff City complete signing of French full-back Kevin Theophile-Catherine "

31st Aug 2013 .

The Bluebirds have now spent more than £30m this summer of landing the Rennes defender in a £2.1m deal

Malky Mackay took his summer spending past the £30m mark after landing French starlet Kevin Theophile-Catherine – and claimed he'll be ready to add more before Monday's transfer deadline.

Full-back Catherine was at Cardiff City Stadium today to watch the Bluebirds earn a 0-0 draw with Everton having put the finishing touches on a £2.1m switch from Rennes,

Yet Mackay – who has been keen Jefferson Montero and Peter Odemwingie going into the final throes of the transfer window – admitted he would still be keen for one more.

But after seeing his side pick up a hard-earned point against Roberto Martinez's men, Mackay claimed his current squad have given him confidence they can cut it even if he cannot add before the deadline.

“We're still trying,” said Mackay, who handed former France Under 21 Catherine a four-year deal.

"If there's something else that comes up over the next couple of days we'll work hard to try and do something.

“But like anything there's competition and the people we bring in have got to add to the squad.

“I think Kevin does that – he's a good defender and someone we've tracked over the last year. He's got pace and is aggressive with good experience in the French top division and I think he'll be a good addition to the squad.

“You always want more but the financial situation can sometime be restrictive or a deal won't happen because bigger clubs come in and take them.

“But if I don't I've got a really good group here and they have shown in the first three games they deserve to be in the Premier League.”

So many right backs, although in Connallys performance today it's needed.

Agreed. Although I think that he is very consistent he can't quite be as decisive as the others.

He gave the ball away constantly, in fact at one point he gave it away four times in a row. His distribution is poor very poor.

Defensively thought he was very good tho.

Agree, could have been a hero too, good opportunity second half on his stronger right foot & for some unknown reason tried to cut inside onto weaker side

I was going to mention that, very strange decision not to hit that. Even if he ain't the best shooter it could have took a deflection or anything.

Hate to go all theological on you ass but "theo" means God, so technically his name means "lover of God". Much like where Luke addresses his gospel to Theophelus (here its actually used as a code name rather than it being a real person) :malky:

Peter Odemwingie expressed his joy after completing his deadline-day move to Cardiff.

It was understood that the striker had been undergoing a medical in south Wales ahead of a reported £2.5million move from West Brom after his spell in the midlands turned sour.

And 45 minutes after the transfer window had officially closed, the Nigerian Tweeted: "Absolutely delighted to be joining Cardiff City FC ! Can't wait to hear the famous Cardiff fans roar ! I promise GOALS !!!"

The 32-year-old, who was also reportedly on Swansea's radar during the summer transfer window, has not been training with the Baggies this season after falling out of favour at The Hawthorns.

Odemwingie hit the headlines in January after driving to QPR on deadline day to close a deal, but the move fell apart as West Brom refused to accept their bid.

He told BBC Sport: "It's a fresh start, a whole new beginning.

"I've joined a club with a strong determination to achieve their goals.

"Cardiff City showed great intent to bring me here. I have to thank the manager and everyone involved in making this transfer happen.

"There are talented and dedicated players in the team, everyone is moving in the right direction and I also want to make a strong contribution as well."

Odemwingie signed for the Baggies from Lokomotiv Moscow for an undisclosed fee in 2010 and has scored 30 goals in 87 games for the Barclays Premier League club before his stunt earlier this year meant his days with Steve Clarke's side were numbered.

The Nigerian will become Malky Mackay's eighth summer signing for the Bluebirds' maiden Premier League campaign as he joins Andreas Cornelius, John Brayford, Simon Moore, Steven Caulker, Gary Medel, Maximiliano Amondarain and Kevin Theophile-Catherine at the Cardiff City Stadium.
