Cardiff Chase Ecuadorian Flyer Whose 80% Shot Accuracy Can Help Fire Them To Safety. Transfer Scouting Report.
By Sam ParkerPosted on August 28, 2013
We are now in the final week of the transfer window and it appears many teams have not completed their summer shopping, with Cardiff City one of those still looking to strengthen.
Despite an impressive victory over Manchester City, many people’s favourites for the title, Malky Mackay isn’t satisfied with his squad in Cardiff’s maiden Premier League season, as they still face a tough battle to ensure that they remain in the top-flight for more than one season.
And it would appear he has identified the flanks as the weak spot in his team, with Jefferson Montero the target in mind to spice up those options, according to the Sky Sports.
Cardiff mustered just one shot on target in their season opener at West Ham and have created just 14 chances in their two matches so far, having to rely on set-pieces to overcome City.
Montero, 23, will bring more thrust down the wings for the Welsh outfit, having already completed 32 take-ons this season in seven appearances for Mexican side Morelia.
This equates to a successful attempt to beat his man once every 20 minutes, a record better than anyone has managed so far in the Premier League.
The Ecuadorian flyer has also bagged two assists for his current employers from the four chances he has created so far, but it’s his goalscoring instincts that will really endear him to the Cardiff faithful.
Montero has already bagged five goals from the wing in seven games for Morelia, with both feet being used to score, while he also boasts a shooting accuracy of 80% from ten attempts at goal.
With the likes of Peter Whittingham ‘enjoying’ a shot accuracy of 17% from his six attempts at this early stage of the season, Montero brings far more reliability in front of goal, with only four players having actually hit the target for Cardiff this season.
A pass accuracy of 83% has allowed Montero to complete 116 passes already this season, Montero does his bit in the build-up play and this will no doubt allow him to contribute heavily toward any goals scored by the Bluebirds.
The only risk that comes with him is his lack of work-rate in the defensive third, having not achieved a single defensive action this season.
He has contested just six tackles (at an admittedly 100% record), and will not be the player Mackay will really be looking to when Cardiff have to fight for victories, as they will no doubt be asked to do on frequent occasions in this first top-flight appearance in 50 years.
There is no doubt that Montero is a fine player, but questions will be raised as his suitability for the position Cardiff find themselves in currently.
His quality however could make their lives easier and bring the goals they will require to survive. He could be a risk Cardiff need to take in order to bring some imagination and creativity to their attack line and fire them to safety.
