Centre-back Ben Turner 'hurt' by Cardiff City fan poll
Cardiff City defender Ben Turner admits he was "hurt" by a poll conducted by a local newspaper in which fans voted for him to be replaced by Mark Hudson.
Turner partnered Stephen Caulker at the heart of Cardiff's defence on Sunday as they claimed a famous 3-2 win over Manchester City in the Premier League.
However, Turner says he understands the calls for club captain Hudson to play.
"I've read the media this week and I've seen what was said by the fans," said the 25-year-old centre-back.

The atmosphere [against Manchester City] was fantastic, I've never known it like that here to be honest... I think the fans were absolutely tremendous
”
Ben Turner
Cardiff City defender
"In many ways I'm with the fans, I think it's a real shame at the minute that Huds isn't playing because he's a fantastic player and he's a fantastic captain.
"But at the same time it did put pressure on me and hopefully my performance has justified my place in the team.
"Obviously it hurts but I'm 25 and I've been here long enough now, it did get me down when I was 18-19 when I had it at Coventry.
"You are going to be questioned why you are in the team at some point in your career but you've got to be a big character about it.
"All I can do is give my best, can't I? That's all I can do and when it's Huds' turn to be in the team I'll be 100% behind him, like he has been behind me."
Saturday's win over 2011-12 champions Manchester City at Cardiff City Stadium - the Bluebirds' first win in the top flight since they were last there in 1962 - went some way to soothe Turner.
The defender, who signed from Coventry City in August 2011 and was awarded a new two-year deal last December, says the Cardiff players must try and reproduce their efforts in every game from now on.
Turner also took the time to praise those Cardiff fans who packed into a 27,068-crowd to roar their team on against Manchester City.
"You can't afford to be even a little percent off. We lifted our game against a squad of players that's probably better than us," Turner said.
"It's not always the better side that wins in terms of if you work hard and you stick together, then every now and again you get a result like that.
"It [the atmosphere] was fantastic, I've never known it like that here to be honest.
"I've played two full seasons, this is the start of my third and I think the fans were absolutely tremendous and if they can maintain that for us, we'll try and maintain performances like that.
"I think we've got to be realistic, we're not going to beat every big team at this stadium, it doesn't matter how well we play or how much noise is in the stadium.
"Sometimes we'll come up short and when that happens we've got to go again, because it's a long, hard season.
"But we'll always be putting 100% in and if they can make that noise I think we'll hold our own."

Respect to Turner to saying it now rather than before the big game. He also responded in the right fashion and was immense vs Man City. He blocked about 3-4 shots that would have definitely trouble Marshall.

That's the only fault in his game in my opinion , every time h has the ball he plays it long but Sunday he stopped it and gave the ball short to medel , he looked a class defender

I hope he does that way hopefully he passes it to the two players near him rather that smash it 60 yards cross ball to one of the opponents center backs heads only for him to knock it down and they other side regain posession

Turner played well yesterday. He should keep his spot, plus i'm not sure how well Hudson would do on the left side of the pairing.

As bad as Turner has been, Hudson has been worse. I thought Hudson did really well last season but the combination of stepping up a level and the injury means that it's Turner every day for me right now. I still think we could do with someone new in who is better to partner Caulker because despite winning one we're still conceding 2 per game and you won't win many games doing that in this division.

Hes got a leader in Medel in front of him now who will constantly ask for the ball from him instead of him just pumping it forward.

To be fair to Man C second goal, pretty much the whole team is going to have to adapt to faster, fitter, stronger players compared to the championship. Players movement is going to be alot different to the Champ, most top teams will have there starting 11 also playing for there countries.
I'm really chuffed with the result, i bet most fans thought were "If we can put in a better performance and keep the score down to 0-1 or 0-2 we be happy"
Turner looked fired up, not even Campbell legs could stop turned blocking shots :p

I'm glad we stuck with him. Although Hids is a class centre half, I prefer Turner. Neither really have pace but they both read the game well and win a lot in the air. I just think Turner is more of a physical presence and his willingness to get in front of a shot is superb.

To mirror Nuclearblue's thoughts if he didn't say it that many times, I agree
Ben Turner sats
0/1 tackles
2/3 Headed Duels
15/15 Clearances
11/18 All Passes
61% Completed Passes

He proved me entirely wrong sunday. Few times last season - and at west ham - I've critisised him for his hoofball but was top class against city. Lets hope he can keep it up.
Bluebirds!!!

No wonder Malky doesn't confide in anyone at Media Wales
Running a poll after one week of the season to see who should be dropped. It's a disgrace if you think about it. Pure amateurs

Turner was excellent on Sun, didn't have any strong feelings on whether or not he or Hudson should start with Caulker but Ben's got the shirt and up to him to keep Hudson out.

I always said he could step up because it suits him more.
He had a great game and proved a lot of critics wrong.. hopefully he keeps it up.
Tue Aug 27, 2013 11:25 pm
Now he has a midfielder in Medel who actually wants the ball and is sitting in front of him he actually has options. Although some of his long balls upfront could've been avoided at West Ham, half the time he had no choice.
