Accrington v Cardiff City " OFFICIAL MATCH THREAD "

Mon Aug 26, 2013 11:16 pm

Accrington Stanley v Cardiff City Carling Cup. Wednesday 28th August 2013.

Accrington Stanley: (Probable) Dunbavin, Murphy, Liddle, Aldred, Wilson, Atkinson, Joyce, Richardson, Naismith, Mingoia, McCarten. Subs: Wilson, Clark, Hatfield, Windass.Gray and Carver.

Looking at the squad we could field against Accrington without having to play any of the side that started versus Man City, does any one else think it could finish in the top half of the Championship? Getting impressed with the strength in depth we have now across all positions. Certainly better than the Macclesfield debacle!!

GK - Moore
RB - Brayford
LB - John
CB - Hudson
CB - McNaughton
CM - Mutch
CM - Cowie
RM - Noone
LM - Harris
CF - Cornelius
CF - Maynard

Subs - Lewis / Lappin / Smith / Conway / Mason / Gestede / Velikonja

Pretty much my team too though I suspect Malky will go for Lewis in goal. :ayatollah:

Be good if Moore went in.

I would have picked Conway ahead of Harris, although Harris has been in sensational form, but I think if Noone starts on one wing we need Conway on the other because he's more defensively sound than Harris. Either way, isn't it great we can debate who will not make our reserve team out of Conway and Harris and we have Smith, Mason and Gestede as subs for our reserves! :o

Whatever the team I expect the win and will feel massively let down if we lose. I want a cup run :ayatollah:

Re: Team V Accrington

My mate asked me today if I wanted a cup run.

My reply was simple: Play the fringe players/reserves/Dvp squad in every cup game and if they win they win if they don't they don't. It might be their only chance of impressing at this point in the season and they should want to do well.

Re: Team V Accrington

Love it when supporters say it's disrespectful to start youth or DVP players as they call them now.

They are meant to be the future of this club and should make the step up to a high level, nothing wrong with it.

Agree with this. Play the likes of Harris and Velokonja (if he's still here) in the Cups with a few other more experienced players like Nooney etc.

Yeah, I like that team by Nevans18. I think we have a strong enough reserve side to make a decent push in the League Cup. It's not that much worse than the side that went on the run to the final two seasons ago.

I just look at our squad now and think how far we've come in such a short space of time to have the luxury of the likes of Conway/Noone, Smith, Gestede and Mason on the bench of our reserves team!

Also raises the question of whether these players will be around much longer?? Would personally like to see Mason sent out on loan this year... If we're playing a system with one up front all year he's not going to get a look in behind Campbell, Maynard, Cornelius, and Gestede (and maybe one other if Malky signs one more?!), but genuinely think he was underused last year and at only 22 years old he could still turn out to be a serious player for us down the years...

Re: Team V Accrington

------------------Marshall-------------------

Brayford--Hudson--mcnaughton---John

Noone----mutch-----cowie-----Conway

------------Maynard-----mason------------

Subs : Lewis , Connolly , lappin , kiss , Harris , smith , gestede

That team is good enough to make the quarters at least as long as they stay away from the big boys in the prem along the way
Really hope we go for this cup this year :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

It's massively important for Cornelius to start this game and have a full 90 on the park IMO ...if he could get on the scoresheet too , it'd be great going into the next league game with our top two strikers riding high on confidence!

Is it more important for him to score a goal against a lower league team or is it better that he is 100% fit for the everton game . Confidence shouldn't be a problem he should be rareing to go now .i wouldn't risk an injury tbh

Malky must surely name the same team for Everton that he did against City, so for me Cornelius has to start. Strikers need goals to build their confidence... they don't need resting to be 100% fit for 5 minute cameo's off the bench.

Remember after the Everton game, its 2 weeks till our next game. Everyone outside of the starting 11 against City should be banging on Malky's door to play against Accrington and prove a point...

It's more important for him to be match fit in time for everton... Playing him tomorrow will ensure that

If he scores then that's even better

And what happens if he gets injured and is out for a few months due to a reckless challenge , some of these games can be hard hitting , sorry but I don't think it's worth the risk he has had a full pre season , he's fit he should be kept for Saturday it's not worth the risk IMO
We have plenty of others desperate to show there worth who need game time , Maynard , mason , rudy and smith should be our attacking options tomorrow

Agree that any player that didn't start on Sun should be busting a gut to start in this game. It's about sticking their hand up and showing they are ready, a good performance and win all helps with the feel good factor before Everton.
Cornelius must start!

I think I'd go with this team

Moore

Brayford
Hudson
Mcnaughton
John

Mason

Subs, Lewis, Oshijali, Lappin, kiss, Conway, Gestede, Maynard

You very rarely see premier league clubs risk there best players in early rounds of cups , especially at places like accrington on a bobbly pitch , if they thought he needed game time they would let him play a development game , lets be fair the development teams we play are arguably better than accrington .
We ain't a lower league team anymore and we NEED our best players injury free , not pussy footing around if ever we needed to wrap our match day squad in cotton wool it's this year ..players like Maynard are the guys for these games .last year nobody wanted to risk kimbo , whitts , Bellamy etc but now you want to risk a 9 mill pound striker ?
No chance keep him home training for the everton game with the team that will start that game and send our second string which is more than capable of winning the game .

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay is expected to rest many of the players who helped claim the club's historic 3-2 win over Manchester City when they travel to Accrington Stanley in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

Summer signing Andreas Cornelius could make his first start for the club after he was named on the bench for the weekend's Barclays Premier League clash at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Defender John Brayford could also be in line to make his debut in place of Matthew Connolly.

Accrington boss James Beattie will be without forward Danny Webber for cup clash.

The 31-year-old will serve the second of a three-match ban for picking up a red card in his side's 3-0 defeat by Bury.

Midfield duo Will Hatfield and James Gray are pushing for starts and could play some part if Beattie chooses to shuffle his pack ahead of the cup tie.

Experienced defender Nicky Hunt is expected to be sidelined for at least another month with medial crucial ligament damage.

Got to win this. Losing to Accrington would be incredibly embarrassing, we have enough quality in our fringe/development squad to get the result so I'm expecting a win
