East Stand extension plan for Cardiff City Stadium

The expansion of Cardiff City Stadium to 33,000 spectators includes the creation of a new VIP area aiming to capitalise on the club’s Premier League status, the plans show.

The Premier Club area would provide an exclusive area for up to 250 guests and seating on the halfway line, according to the planning application submitted to Cardiff council.

The level four premium concourse will be accessed by a dedicated entrance in the extension, with its own reception, stairs, lift and open bar/lounge area. Either side of the central Premium Club will be upgraded concourse areas with 'enhanced' finishes and food and drinks.

The proposed extension of the Ninian Park stand – referred to as the East Stand in the planning application – will increase the Leckwith stadium’s capacity by 5,150 seats.

Construction is expected to create 330 jobs and add £31m to the local economy, with an extra four full-time and 100 part-time jobs related to the stadium next season.

The steel frame structure will be built behind the current stand over the course of this season, with the roof removed in stages before the new tier is added from late May.

If the plans are approved by the council’s planning committee next month, the club wants to start building in October – stressing it is working to a tight construction programme.

“The time available for construction is extremely limited given that CCFC are holding their first competitive fixture in early August 2014,” Jessica Jones, of consultants Arup, writes.

“When considering that a number of ramp-up events will need to be undertaken in preparation for this, the earliest completion date has been targeted for July 18-25, 2014.

“Initial feedback from the tendering contractors has reinforced that the timescale is deliverable, but require the earliest possible start on site to have any chance of achieving practical completion in readiness for the 2014/15 season.”

Club director Steve Borley previously said the stadium would be ready to host the UEFA European Super Cup, between the winners of this seasons Champions League and Europa League.

The planning application does not state what colour the new seating will be, but confirms the club’s name will be lit-up at night in alternating colours – “predominantly red”.

Canton’s Labour Richard Cook met with stadium manager Wayne Nash to discuss the plans and praised the club’s efforts to encourage fans to leave their cars at home.

Coun Cook backed the introduction of parking enforcement officers in the City Gardens area, as suggested in the application’s transport statement.

“There are still far too many fans who park illegally. It’s only going to get more difficult for fans to park near the stadium so they are going to have to find other means of transport.”

Coun Cook said the club had suggested the stadium’s capacity could eventually be expanded to about 42,000 should the club remain in the Premier League.

Its not the fans fault there isn't enough parking around the stadium, the club need to address the issue.

The roof looks stupid like that.

But if we establish ourselves at premiership level I cant see why we can't upgrade the stadium to 40000+.

This design should add abit more atmosphere like places like palace and leeds, as most of the old grounds are designed this way
