My First and Last Post

Tue Aug 20, 2013 10:43 am

Hi all -

By way of background, I am a Cardiff City fan of quite a few years. I started supporting the club when Carl Dale, Steve White etc. were playing for us. I now live abroad but read this forum and the CCMB from time to time. However, I have never posted...until now.

The reason I am posting is really to share with you my exasperation with the re-branding of the club. I tried to purchase a Blue replica kit from the Club Shop this week but see that it is still not available and the entire website, and all the products within it, are red. I am sure that there are people on here who are bored with discussions around this but I am not. Rather, I am saddened by the response of the fans to the re-branding.

As yet, all I have seen is a petition, a march and a few meetings. Whilst these are I'm sure well intentioned, I am not sure what they acheive. All of these relatively small-time efforts to date have been completely ignored by Vincent Tan and the management of the club. To be clear, I have a great deal of respect for the people involved in these efforts but simply think that they are ineffective.

So what do I suggest?

(1) Create an Achievable Goal. Vincent Tan is never going to bring back the blue kit entirely. However, I think that making a clear demand for a mixed blue and red kit (whether that is the shorts being Blue like Spain or parts of the short being Blue like Crystal Palace) could appeal to Vincent Tan. The BU campaign features only blue. If instead it were to feature both blue and red and focus more on uniting all fans of the club, I think this might be appealing to Vincent Tan and allow his to make the change without loosing face.

(2) Create an Effective Campaign. Vincent Tan will only pay attention if there is a well-orchastrated and innovative media campaign around the issue. One idea would be to create a campaign in Malaysia which changes the colours of their national team's kit. Another idea would be to ask supporters of away clubs to come to the stadium wearing Blue in support of the cause. Whatever it is, it has to be innovative and it needs to catch the attention of the global media. If not, Vincent Tan will simply not pay any attention.

Finally, I often read the views of people who say that Vincent Tan should be respected because he has invested in the club as if he is some sort of selfless investor. He expects to receive back every single pound that he has put in and he probably will. His threats to leave are not to be taken seriously. He won't leave until he is in a position to recoup his money which is not now. The club was here before he came and will remain here after he has left. People need to wake up and realise that the club is the real asset - a capital city with a huge catchment area and potential to expand. When Vincent Tan decides to sell, others will be ready to buy.

Peace out,

Thats the trouble when you rely solely on this and the other forum for your info. This whole thing is a storm in a teacup and most of your ideas have been discussed at some point or other on this site.(something you would know if you have read this and the other forum)

PS after re-reading it reminds me of Roathies garbage.

Great post. :ayatollah:

Though for me, blue and red is as alien to CCFC as black and red.

Doubt it. His total erosion of the blue is evidence enough that he doesn't want to compromise.

Then he wouldn't dismiss the blue in the way that he has. The rebrands getting worse, not better. Less blue around than ever.

If a compromise could be reached we could have a mixture of blue and red.

As I've already explained, I don't feel it could be reached. Anyway, red and blue is just as alien to CCFC as black and red.

It's probably the best that can be hoped for at the moment. :ayatollah:

Well intentioned post and I can see you have given it some thought. But honestly resistance is futile with regard to the rebrand and relying on a country to change its colours and getting Man United fans to wear blue is never going to happen as they simply have no interest in Cardiff City and it internal problems.

Also the formation of BU has been a shambles and whilst I accept that Sian Branson and the rest of the organisers are good people and well intentioned they have been badly let down by the militant fundamentalist on their social media sites who just want to post bile and hate towards a man who for whatever reason has transformed CCFC in more ways than just the rebrand.

Cardiff City being a sleeping giant with fantastic potential was identified well before now but in the past only Sam Hammam and asset stripping private companies have shown any interest.

This time VT has a plan to break into the Asian market and for that we need to be red (so he tells us). I'm not saying that I'm happy with being red but reality is it can't be done otherwise (they are the terms laid down by VT) and no-one has ever produced even a basic business plan to the contrary.

Finally 90% of fans are happy to go along with the changes provide they benefit CCFC. That is where the small minority differ with the rest. They are not interested in what happens after they force a reversing of the rebrand, they just want to do it.

Every time you post i want to see a treky quote from now on.

Re: My First and Last Post

Good post, I was at the pre season friendly with Chievo and it was later commented on about the amount of red being worn, 1st season in the Premiership, every kid (and adults) wants the new kit for the start of the season and the only one available is Red. This is a clear marketing ploy and I suspect VT is afraid of the competition and has therefore eliminated it. I see the usual guff about marketing in Asia, well I have yet to see the business plan for that, the Asians, like most other races, will buy the kit of a successful team, not because it is red/blue/pink, just as well he doesn't have the franchise for Guiness, "Can I have a pint of the Red Stuff please"

It surprises me that possibly one of the strongest chances of forcing Tan's hand on the shirt colour, has been ignored.

Refusing to buy the red merchandise would have hurt his pocket, and possibly seen a rethink on his part.

We have a blue shirt that is clearly the third choice kit of three.

Did I claim we didn't have a blue shirt? :? Blue is getting less & less, that's fact.

No it wouldn't,not a chance.I remember a bunch of idiots on here thinking Tan's big plan to finance city was shirt sales in asia and you seem to forget a huge majority of fans go with the rebrand anyway. And before anyone says reluctantly it seems that the majority of fans are so reluctant they won't lift a finger to support anything against the rebrand even the BU.

Re: My First and Last Post

Tue Aug 20, 2013 2:35 pm

I'm sure I've made it clear on here that I despise the rebrand. I hate the rebrand more than I dislike Swansea City. To me it's an insult to our club.

That said, I can view things rationally, and as such, I'd say the following:

OI admire Tan's idea of the rebrand, and the principle of thinking outside the box. As a theory, as a suggestion, it isn't a bad one. One of Tan's biggest mistakes however in this entire mistake that is called the rebrand is that he seems to show no interest in consulting or engaging with fans.

It is good business practice to always engage with your customers, but despute requests, Tan seems reluctant to get around the table and discuss matters in a mature and sensible way.

The natural and inevitable result of that is that things will be played out in the media..

Tan gives out free red scarves...pro blue songs become prominent..

City hardly wear blue away..so fans wear blue in larger numbers...

Tan slags off the fans, calls them disruptive....so marches occur....

Tan delays the sale of the blue kit....so some fans pay for a advertising board.

Tan is damaging the clubs image here. You simply cannot just do what you want in life. That is an indisputable fact of business, and an indisputible fact of life.

To achieve success, you have to engage and consult and respect people's opinion.

Bluebirds Unite have tried to have meetings. The fans are singing blue songs peacefully. We are doing our bit.

Now Tan needs to be the bigger man. Accept that his rebrand has caused disharmony and agree to meet the fans for the good of the club going forward.
