Tottenham Hotspur star Etienne Capoue admits Cardiff City move was not a big enough lure
20th August 2013
After his on-off Cardiff City transfer saga this summer, the French midfielder who made his debut for Tottenham yesterday says Cardiff was no step up from Toulouse.
Cardiff City summer target Etienne Capoue has revealed he turned the Bluebirds down because they were not a step up from Toulouse.
The cultured central midfielder, who opted to join Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, insists Malky Mackay's team are no better than the Ligue 1 club he left.
He said: "Cardiff would not be a step up in my career. Tottenham allowed me to make that leap, Cardiff did not."

After coming off the bench for Andre Villas Boas' team during Sunday's win against Crystal Palace on Sunday, told Mercato 365 : “I decided that I wanted to play in a very attractive league. Because the Premier League is the top league in Europe, I decided that I wanted to go there and Tottenham was an opportunity that I could not refuse."
Malky Mackay had hoped to tempt the 25-year-old to the Cardiff City Stadium by the lure of regular first team football with the Brazil World Cup coming up at the end of the season.
After the Bluebirds had a bid accepted and personal terms agreed, the player decided to pass up the chance of a move to South Wales and decided to wait to a bigger club to come in with Spurs, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid in the running.
The French international, who admits he had to leave Toulouse, despite his love for the club, said: "I told myself that if I have a good season at Tottenham, I would have my chance to go to the World Cup in Brazil.
"I had a very good relationship with the president and staff during the transfer market and everyone agreed I should leave.”

What we can blame him for is not telling us straight away that he had no intention of signing for us.Why agree personal terms and a transfer fee when you are not interested in coming here?
Just like Ince, wasted everyone's time and efforts, delaying and delaying as much as possible in the hope that something better will come along. For him it did, for Ince it didn't.
Either way, both of them strung us along for far too long without apparently ever intending to join.
Not impressed.
