They don't have to show it to you, the shop can even withhold the right to show the police, unless there is a warrant

Never trust a shopkeeper,me and a mate of mine were working in a shop in Llanishen village once and he left his jumper in the shop and we had finished the job.Next day as I lived near I went to the shop to collect it.The shop owner was wearing it :o

Think you'll find that if you report it to the Police and an officer attends at the shop, they'll get to view the CCTV! :ayatollah:

It's not to say they WON'T show you

Just their obligation not to if they so choose as it poses a security risk

If somebody drops/loses property (which includes money) and somebody picks it up and keeps it for themselves, then the offence is "Theft By Finding!"

As I said though, the Police have to suspect that a crime has been committed, before they have the power to seize the footage! :ayatollah:

And if you keep the trolley, you won't have to pay 5p for a bag ;)

I think under the data protection act you can make a request for footage of yourself (your personal data) but it will cost you a tenner

Correct definition, but as it is security footage then you are entitled to have a copy that is burned off by the store, not see the actual cameras themselves - again because of the stores security risk. Obviously if you believe they have been economical with the truth and not burned off the whole thing, then thats where you get the police involved with a warrant. Although 9 times out of 10 if you walk into any store with a copper and ask to see the CCTV they will back down and allow it

The Police don't need warrants to search in all circumstances!

As I said, if an officer has enough suspicion that a crime has occurred (In this case a Theft), then he/she would be entitled to seize the CCTV footage!

He/she could opt to apply for a search warrant, or he/she could just arrest the suspect (In this case the shopkeeper) and search the premises without a warrant. If the shopkeeper lived somewhere other than at the shop premises and had driven there from home, the officer would also have the power to search the vehicle and could also if necessary, take the shopkeeper to his/her home and search there as well, all without the need for a search warrant!

The last sentence of your paragraph is probably correct, however, what do you think will happen if a shopkeeper gets a written request to provide CCTV footage of a certain day, when the shopkeeper will know that he/she has picked up £50 from the floor of the shop and kept it as their own? :?

I'll tell you what will happen, the footage will be erased in some way, shape or form and the shopkeeper will inform the authorities that there had been a problem with the system on that particular day!

There will be no need for an officer to then get hold of a warrant, as there'd be no evidence at the shop to find!

As I said earlier, I think you'll find that an officer can seize CCTV evidence where a crime may have been committed and it's more prevalent during nightclub assaults for example, where a customer accuses a bouncer or bouncers, of assaulting them and the Police seize the CCTV footage, so that the staff or nightclub owner, can't interfere with it!

I left my step ladders in a customers once, went back couple days later and he was outside cleaning the downstairs windows in them. He wouldn't have it that they were mine. Had all my old paint spills on them. I just put his number on Craigslist. I'm sure he had some fun with that
