" The World Were Watching Cardiff City at West Ham "
Malky Mackay's Cardiff City lost their first ever Premier League game 2-0 at West Ham United on Saturday as the world watched.
Gareth Rogers takes a look at how the world's media assessed the Bluebirds' performance.
Every national newspaper sent a journalist to Upton Park yesterday to cover the Bluebirds' first top flight appearance in 51 years.
But as Malky Mackay's men went down tamely to a 2-0 defeat the reporters weren't overly positive about the performance.
This is how some of the newspapers in the UK reported the game.
The Guardian -Jacob Steinberg
There is no reason for Cardiff to panic.
This is their first season in the revamped top division and they are surely better than this.
Although their effort could not be faulted, Malky Mackay's side were devoid of inspiration.
Mail Online – Ian Stafford
The club's first game back in the top flight for 51 years and, in truth, they did well to register nil.
Goal-shy Cardiff, on the evidence of their first Premier League outing, will settle for 17th place and survival.
The Independent – Glenn Moore
Record buy Gary Medel was tidy in possession but showed no indication of why he was nicknamed 'pitbull' at Sevilla, or why he cost £11m.
The Telegraph - Chris Hatherall
There must have been huge expectation for Cardiff City fans in what is their club’s first season in the top flight in 51 years, but the reality was rather subdued as a tepid game was sealed by a West Ham side who rarely reached even third gear, but were nevertheless deserved winners.
The Premier League has also brought the spotlight to the South Wales club from all corners of the globe.
Here is how they saw the game from America to Asia to Australia.
SB Nation (USA) – Graham MacAree
Although the newcomers spent heavily in their quest to avoid relegation, they're still far from a coherent unit.
The hosts were ripping Cardiff apart almost at will.
The Bluebirds were a little more adventurous in the second half, but they were still struggling to actually trouble their hosts, who were still having the better of the chances .
The visitors finally showed a bit of initiative after the second goal, but it was too little, too late, and aside from a late Whittingham free kick, Jaaskelainen's clean sheet was never in any real doubt. Neither were West Ham's three points.
Channel news Asia
It was a brutal introduction to the Premier League for Cardiff, who were making their first appearance in the top flight since 1962 after winning the Championship last term.
NBC Sports
Cardiff struggled all afternoon and the 2-0 victory momentarily put West Ham United second in the Premier League.
Sportal.com (Australia)
Cole's early strike set the home side on their way at Upton Park and, despite periods of Cardiff pressure, the hosts never looked like losing.
