Alan Warboys

Sun Aug 18, 2013 8:40 pm

I know we signed him to replace Toshack, he scored 27/60, pretty prolific, I seem to remember a gap between selling Toshack and buying Warboys, does anybody remember how long the gap was, I was only about 9 so it seemed like ages to me. I'm thinking we just missed out on going up that season and wondering what the results were like in the period without Warboys. Is there a site to find out these type of stats

Toshack left us on the 17th November 1970, thats when he signed for Liverpool. Warboys first game for us was 9th January 1971.

Depends on how you look at it, because I seem to remember we were on fire before we lost Toshack and it took us a while to get back into more of a winning streak!

I may be wrong, but I thought that our overall record was far better before we lost Toshack! :ayatollah:

My eldest was asking me what I remember from my first season watching City, I mentioned a certain Real Madrid game, which he didn't believe and sort of went from there, I could remember the board getting some stick about not replacing Toshack quick enough, we had notoriously dodgy boards for years

Your right we were on fire, having beat Hull 5-1 the week before we went up to QPR a week later [Toshacks last game, sorry Mr Borley]and beat them 1-0 with a goal from Leighton Phillips so we had beaten two of our main rivals in successive weeks, this must have alarmed Fred Dewey and the rest of the City board so much that they sold Tosh by the Monday...BASTARDS......

He did score all 4.

With a bad leg as well. He was limping from the start.

Not his first game though.

That was Sheff Wed his old club. He scored 2

It was always said at the time that the city board didn't want promotion really ,it would cost too much ,hence the sale of top players ,tosh went for a hundred thousand .
warboys cost forty thou

Think we should have kept him instead of shopping him for Dave Powell andGil Reece from Sheffield Utd.
He went on to have a good career in terms of being a regular goal scorer and good target man.

It's amazing the number of people who think that was Warboys' first match. In fact, it was on Boxing Day 1970 in a 1-1 draw with Swindon at Ninian Park in which Mel Sutton scored a rare goal for us. We played six not eleven matches in between selling Toshack and signing Warboys - the first of them being a 4-1 win over struggling Blackburn at Ninian Park. Home results weren't bad during the period in question with a 0-0 draw in a top of the table clash with Luton and a 3-1 win over Sunderland following the Blackburn match, but we lost all of our away games - Charlton, Oxford and Millwall were all in the bottom half of the table at the time and yet we lost 1-0 at the old Manor Ground and 2-1 at the two London sides.
I've always been convinced that these results, and, hence, our failure to go up was down to the Board's initial failure to pay Sheffield Wednesday's asking price for Warboys - it needed those three defeats to stir them into action.

I was there. Hat trick in the first 9 minutes of the game, 2 of them from the long throws of Bobby Woodruff which Colin Balderstone the Carlisle centre half completely misjudged. I believe this is the quickest hat trick ever scored by a Cardiff player.
