' SKY interview with Malky '

Malky Mackay admits slow start cost Cardiff in defeat at West Ham.

" Malky Mackay: Looking to stay positive after Upton Park setback "

Malky Mackay was left to rue a slow start to the season as Cardiff City's Premier League bow ended in defeat at West Ham United.

The Bluebirds were making their first top flight appearance in more than 50 years at Upton Park, but the occasion appeared to get the better of them.

Mackay was reluctant to offer stage fright as an excuse at the final whistle, but admits his side must take important lessons from a 2-0 reversal in the capital.

He told Sky Sports: "I don't know if it was the weight of expectation, but we certainly started slowly.

"If a good player comes up then we might have a chance. But it's not just about spending money, it's about making sure we spend at the correct time and the correct man comes in here"
Malky Mackay
"We knew that we were going to be up against a good team today, an experienced team that were playing in front of their own fans in a big atmosphere.

"For the first 10-15 minutes when they scored their goal, and it was a clinical goal, we certainly started slowly. I thought after that, for the next half an hour, we were excellent.

"We probably took that into the second half and for the first half an hour of the second half we had plenty of the ball and at times looked quite good.

"It's about being clinical. They had one (chance) in the second half, we had one in the second half, and they scored and we missed ours.

"Overall, I can't be too hard on my players because I thought they played well."

Pressed on whether he is planning to dip back into the transfer market before the summer window closes, with Cardiff reported to have money to spend, Mackay added: "You have got to spend it in the correct manner, you have got to spend it on certain players.

"If a good player comes up then we might have a chance. But it's not just about spending money, it's about making sure we spend at the correct time and the correct man comes in here, and we're competing with huge teams for that."

Love to know what he really thinks, no doubt a little more concerned that he would suggest.
Lets hope we get busy in the transfer market ASAP

I can't believe how negatively we played today, you can't keep inviting teams onto you full stop !

We need to be realistic, we had two new players to last year, one only teamed up yesterday, to all intent we played with a championship team against a premiership team. I suspect away from home this season, the Viking will play up front on his own with Gunnar/Medel covering the back four allowing Whitts and Kimbo to pick up knock downs and wide men supplying when they can, with the Viking missing today, we played plan B and it looks like plan B needs some work, we have yet to see plan A.

Its called irony. Read the post again, West Ham only went second and above all those clubs AFTER THEY BEAT US.

You must be American or something if your understanding of irony or subtlety is that low.

Annis, good post and I agree we were second best where it mattered (Medel and debutant John were the standout two for me on their City debuts, as such)

I was lucky enough to speak to Carl on the way back home (via the telephone) and his was the best analogy of the game I have heard to date...and it differed to Malky's considerably ;)

The guys in the car agreed completely with him and they reckon he should get into newspapers! LOL

First game and there were some signs of promise but also some deadwood on the pitch :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Gave a good account of ourselves

West Ham didnt get out of first gear. They didnt need to we kept smashing the ball up to them.

The moment MM turned to Rudy to change the game I knew the guy hasnt got a clue whats needed for this division.

We were 3 games in last season before anything like his new team emerged. I suspect the Everton game will give us our first glimpse this season.

Real tough start to the season, we have to face the possibility of no points after 3 games, even though we are home, I wouldn't expect any points against Man City, and Everton will be favourites for an away win.....

We need to stick with them though, there are three worse teams than us for sure.

Sunderland have a real tough run of games, coming up and a brand new team, it's looks difficult for them and it won't take long for their fans to get on their backs.

One thing is for sure - looking at yesterdays results in general, there are going to be some high scoring games this season and we need to ensure that we take the game to the opposition with attacking football. My mate is a Norwich season ticket holder and he said that both sides in their match just went for it yesterday and I think this philosophy would suit us better than sitting back and inviting sides on to us.

I guess he has to keep the 'positivity' amongst the squad as he figures it out. It's only the first game and no-one said it would be easy. More players will surely come in and it was, after all, a difficult away game first ;)

Despite the doom and gloom of some of our well known Soothsayers, it was simply a good lesson learned against a team that will upset a few more along the way :ayatollah:

I get that he needs to be positive. I'd prefer a little bit of honesty from him when we've blatantly been poor.

"We were extremely poor in the first half"

"I think we were a bit overawed by the occasion"

Onwards and upwards as they say! :malky:
