Whitts in my opinion really does have a point to prove and I hope he proves the doubters like myself wrong over a full season

Cardiff City star Peter Whittingham putting selection woes behind him to prove Premier League point
17 Aug 2013

Fleet-footed midfielder Peter Whittingham looks set to slot into Malky Mackay's maiden Premier League XI tomorrow and admits he has a point to prove

Peter Whittingham is ready for action at West Ham

Cardiff City star Peter Whittingham says he's ready to put last season's selection heartache behind him and prove he is a Premier League player.

The man who was released by Aston Villa before arriving in South Wales and has turned down several opportunities to join Premier League clubs, was left out my manager Malky Mackay at the end of last season after suffering with a loss of form.

Now re-energised after a solid pre-season, the 28-year-old said: "There is a point for everyone to prove, it is the next step up and it is about people acclimatising to that and going up another level again.

"We won the Championship last year, we looked good and we were top from November on. We know we are good enough and we are just looking forward to it.

"I have a point to prove, I was released by Villa so it is a big point for me and it is one I am relishing."

He described his last few seasons of missing out on promotion four times before eventually going up last April, as a rollercoaster and said: “Once you go through the rollercoaster where you might go up and you don't, when you finally get there it feels a but surreal.

“It is going to be a big year for everyone involved and we will need everyone but we are confident we can do well.

“I would not change it for the world though.

"I said when I came here I wanted to help get Cardiff to the Premier League and now it has happened I want to kick on from here.”

But even though he is expected to put last season's selection woes behind him and start at West Ham tomorrow, Whittingham is well aware that players like newboy Gary Medel and star Kim Bo-Kyung will make it more difficult than ever to hold down a place in Malky Mackay's team.

He said: “It's one of those where we have a big squad and it is going to be hard to get in the starting line-up. “The manager has spent a bit of money so it is going to be hard but it is all about taking your chance when you get it and keeping the shirt when you get it and playing well.”

Whittingham met Medel for the first time at training today but could pair up with him at the heart of the Bluebirds' midfield tomorrow.

The former England U21 said: “I have just met him for the first time, I shook his hand and I was a bit nervous actually.

“But I shook his hand and it seemed fine, so I'll take that as good

“There is a buzz around created by the sort of money being spent.

“We know it is for the good of the club.”

Another of the big names to arrive at the Cardiff City Stadium this summer was defender Steven Caulker from Tottenham.

Whittingham says the England cap is more than good enough to deal with the hype of his £8.5m transfer fee.

The set-piece specialist said: “ Steven has done really well in pre-season games.

“It is a big ask for him to live up to the hype but I am sure he's ready for it.”

I don't necessarily agree with him in the respect of he has no more of a point to prove than anyone else in last years squad.
He's been brilliant for us IMO ever since he joined us with the exception of half way through last season when he was burnt out.
Should have been rested much earlier than he was would have helped & some say was played out of position.

Lethal when afforded time but I think he's mentally frail & will get found out by tactically aware midfielders early on in the season. I think the opposition second striker will just drop back and sufficiently pressurise him into anonymity. He may still have a role at dead balls. Hope i'm wrong.

Whitts has no point to prove in my opinion and having justed watched his interview what he actually said is "Maybe I have a point to prove to Villa".

He has been our most creative midfield player since he joined our club and without his contribution last season we would not be in the PL this season.

In a way I hope the opposition does concentrate on him because that may well bring a bit of space and freedom for Kimbo and he may well prove a revelation this season.

No more to prove than everybody else in the team. Whitts has been our best player for many seasons. He was at the start of last season and probably would have been in the second part of the season if played in his correct position.

I think he'll do what he wants. If he does and we're right, our midfield 3 could be seriously awesome? :ayatollah:

Spot on. Laughable that some have said he is mentally frail and won't cope. Players get more time in the Premier League to play and Charlie Adam lapped it up no end. Whittingham will make the step up with ease.

I'd personally stick Whittingham left wing and use him as the slower Bentley type of winger who can deliver. He would provide the perfect balls for Cornelius and the knock downs will be followed up by others.

Another options is a 4-2-3-1 with Aron and Medal holding and then Bellamy LAM, Whitts CAM and Kim RAM and then Whittingham can interchange with Bellamy to deliver balls from the left if needs be as Bellamy gets in the box to support Cornelius.

Totally agree that Whitts has nothing to prove. Whitts showed by being loyal your opportunity will come. I appreciate everything ex players do for us, but Chopra Bothroyd and Burke must have a hint of regret. Great player and I really hope he has a great season.

He's gonna score a 90th minute winner with a 35 yard free kick at Villa Park :ayatollah:

Was obviously tired towards the end of last season. However the guy is a class act and you know how the saying goes form is temporary....

He simply needs to play in a position that is best suited to him and his game and one where he can hurt the opposition and that's certainly not sitting just in front of the back four!! :?

Hard to show your class ability being played in the wrong role and being overused.

He passes and keeps play ticking all day long.

Set pieces and just master class.

This! He definitely deserves to start today. A legend in my eyes. That goal against Bilbao last week showed he still has an eye for goal too, he just has to be played in the right position!

'More time to play in the prem' Most misleading overused cliché in football . I like Whitts style but he's not useful enough off the ball, on the ball he needs too much time which he won't get in the dangerous areas, If he drops deep the second striker will have him on lock down. After Villa he's got much too prove & i hope he does well.

Well, he's in a position now at City where he's not been much before........having to compete hard for a starting place.

He's been immence for us and is worshipped when he scores, so I'm hoping the best is to come out of him.

He needs to dig in, and embrace the gaps in his game for improvement. Going missing for spells of the game would be a massive no-no and could end up with him being sold in January.

Looked good when running FORWARDS but I think that was only the once or twice ... hope he can get some confidence going
