I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks Tommy Smith won't feature a great deal this season and I'm sure I'm not the only one who was surprised to see him starting yesterday. However, I thought Smith was excellent, I'm struggling to think of a time where he gave the ball away. We spent a large part of the game yesterday chasing the ball and Bilbao gave us a taste of what to expect this season. Turner in particular kept needlessly giving the ball away and we really need to try keeping the ball better.
Tommy Smith is a very good footballer who was looking back to his old self last season before his injury. He isn't going to give the opposing full back nightmares, but in a season where we are going to have to produce gritty, hard grafting team performances, particularly away from home, I think Smith may still have a role to play this season.

He is an intelligent player, and will never lose that, his injury came just as he was starting to purr and is indicative of our luck, if he can recapture that form, I agree he will be a very useful member of the squad.

I thought he was going to be one of the players of the season up until his injury, sadly after that he didn't look near the player, not sure why. He was pretty awful towards the end of the season.

Agreed but he looked back to his old self yesterday and I think he did enough to keep his place in the team for West Ham.

Tommy Smith was excellent at retaining possession last season and that could be "HUGE" this season so i expect him to play a part. If only he had a touch more pace he would be one of the 1st names on my teamsheet.

Agreed, yesterday showed if we needlessly give the ball away, it will be a lot harder to get it back this season. As already said, Smith is a very good, intelligent footballer who I think will still be a useful squad member if he can stay fit and perform the way he did for the first half of last season before his injury.

I think the fact that he has started the last two games means he will start against West Ham. However for much of the first half I thought he was very poor yesterday. Improved after half time but he didn't seem to know what his role was and barely got forward or tracked back to help the overworked Connolly enough. Just my opinion.

I really like Smith, Technically he's fantastic, and reads the game so well. He's levelled headed, and I bet he's fantastic to have in the dressing room, and someone to advise our younger players.
I really hope he gets decent playing time this season, because he's a big asset to us

I must have been watching a different game!
He was way off the pace and only slightly better than the previous week. Flat footed and provided no threat whatsoever down the flank. As I stated in a previous thread how he starts over Nooner or Conway is baffling.
I like Malky but let's face it Smith and Donald are his blue eyes. Neither are good enough to be in this squad.

I like Smith he's a battler but I can't see him starting ahead of Bellamy, Noone and Conway.

Agree with your comments on Smith but would keep Cowie at the moment unless we spend big in midfield again.

I think cowie and smith are decent championship players not premier standard in my eyes .cowie couldnt get in the team last year in the championship what chance he got in the prem this year? hope we get a fast skillful winger who can beat his man and put some danger crosses for cornelious and co to get on the end of.

Depending how we strengthen I still think Cowie can play a part as a sub. A good all round game but legs that can run, ideal to come on and close a game down.
