For those of you fortunate to see Gibbo play for City in the early 70s does he remain one of the most creative midfielder you've seen play for us?
Think of his dominance against Real Madrid and Leeds (Bremner and Giles).

Yes, i started watching the city in 1971 and in my opinion he is the best midfielder we have ever had, a fantastic player who had it all, he liked a good bet in the bookies too.

luved him without doubt one of the best midfield players to turn out for city, remember him wasting time by the corner flag when we needed a result....they could,nt get the ball off him without a foul. Brilliant.

And boy did they foul him! kicked him all over the park, his legs looked like they had been through a grinder

Absolutely adored the guy. Probably my favourite City player of all time
Not only skilful but would go thru' a brick wall to get the ball back and never stopped running
Also, a sign of the times, he'd chat to us kids when he would take a throw in or if the game stopped for any reason.

One of the players who sticks out in my memory as being absolute class on an absolutely crap pitch.I can still see him doing a pirouette around the centre circle and passing the ball out wide. I am sure he could have played at a top level in today's game absolutely no problem.

Fantastic player - an absolute midfield dynamo. Cannot recall any other city player being close to having his talents.

good point about the pitch. In those days the only grass was near the corner flags.
From November on it was like Barry Island! Sand everywhere to cover the mud and the old heavy leather ball:lol:
On today's pitches and with the lighter footballs he would have been unbelievable

Our best player ever.

Yes, Woody would keep winding his arms round and round after the throw - had some great players in those days, what about Andy Anderson, a great winger I reckon?

Gibbo was great, but in my opinion the most gifted player of that period was Tony Villars.

Wasn't it Villars who crossed for Brian Clarke's goal v Real Madrid?
As far as I can recall he was a very good but inconsistent.

No it was nigel rees, tony villars scored the eqauliser against crystal palace a few years later, it kept us in the 2nd division and sent palace down.

The kicks he took caught up with him in the end ,legs used to swell up like balloons towards the end. I think Ian Hutchinson from Chelsea had a longer throw than Woodruff, wouldn't have been much in it though.

Folklore has it that he used to have 3 pints in the Culverhouse on his way to the game.
(Not sure if this is true!)

I have followed the city since 1964 so have seen many great players grace our turf, but Ian Gibson is my favourite player through all those years. Nothing too flash but just gifted in every department and a great reader of the game.
Ian Ian Ian Ian Gibson

Yes of course. The Clarke goal sticks in the memory but you have reminded me about the Villars goal which if I remember correctly was on a Wednesday night -a shot into the Canton goal.
