Cardiff City’s: FK Partizan Belgrade’s Vladimir Stojkovic could join David Marshall, Joe Lewis and Simon Moore

Cardiff City did well to rocket into the Premier League for a lucrative season ahead, but staying in the top flight is challenging. As Blackpool proved a few seasons ago, you can score many goals and play beautiful football but if you concede too many, relegation is never too far away.

While David Marshall and Joe Lewis are experienced goalkeepers, does Cardiff City need to look abroad to find a bargain goalkeeper with a spectacular record to boost their chances of staying up?

Manchester United took a risk with David de Gea and while he struggled initially and was incredibly expensive, nobody can dispute Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to bring him to Old Trafford, with the skill he showed in Spain proving to have developed greatly since his debut in the Premier League.

Cardiff City need to expand their options and rather than leaving it until the last minute, paying expensive transfer fees for desperately needed players, the team must look to experienced but perhaps youthful alternatives to help the them in the long-term – and that means seeking a player who will be willing to commit to the club for the rest of his career.
Could that player be 30-year-old Vladimir Stojkovic, FK Partizan Belgrade’s goalkeeper and one of the most talented stoppers in Europe?
Last season, he kept 16 clean sheets in 21 games in the Bundesliga. He only conceded seven goals. He has eight Champions League matches to his name and was in front of the net for the full 90 minutes of Serbia’s 1-0 win against a supreme Germany in the 2010 World Cup.
With that record, the talented goalkeeper is likely to cost at least £1.3m if he makes a move to an English team such as Cardiff City. But his presence could prove positive as his talents will potentially result in an improvement in the team’s performance at the back.
Vladimir Stojkovic’s contract expires at the end of December so he could be encouraged over on a free transfer but he’ll soon be snapped up by eagle-eyed clubs so it is vital that if Cardiff City is to land him, the team act fast. Vladimir Stojkovic is an affordable talent Southampton cannot afford to write off.
