All the very best for this coming season

Wed Aug 07, 2013 9:40 pm

Hi guys

I just wanted to wish City all the very best for this coming season. From experience the best advice I can give you is enjoy it, this is coming from a Charlton fan. There will be ups and downs and you will lose more than you win but you have enough to survive and I'm sure you will. My only regret is that Dad isn't still alive to see it, he would have been a proud man especially as you start at his boyhood club West Ham on Saturday.

Finally could any of you confirm that the bar the club named after him is a permanent thing or was it just for last season, hoping to come down for the Newcastle game in August and whilst I have been insider it my Brother hasn't and just wondered if the bar is still going to be called the Eddie May bar? We will also be planting a tree in the memorial garden in his memory and putting a stone down similar to that of Fred Keenor's.

All the best again, good luck at Upton Park and for the season.

Paul

The entire bar area is full of photos, press cuttings etc from his time in charge so I can't see it changing any time soon tbh - and rightly so, some of my most treasured memories in the 40+ years I've followed the City. And btw, by a strange coincidemce my old man's a Charlton fan!

Eddie was the manager during my first real memories of the club growing up... I will always have extremely fond memories of those times. Going along to the City as a Junior bluebird watching Eddie May's Barry army.

Regarding your father's bar, I am sure it's a permanent fixture. He was a very popular person during many City fans favourite times of following the club. :ayatollah:

Your father was a true Gent and epitomised everything that is Cardiff City Football Club.

God bless his soul xx

Thanks Guys, good to know about the bar and that the clubs history plays a massive part in the present and their future that is how it should be, I live back in Wrexham these days and whilst I am delighted that the fans run the club hand on heart I cannot say the same, they have a rich history too but it feels like they are a new club these days but good luck to them anyway I would like to see them back in the football league.

I run a Charlton forum so pop over and see us whenever you like, I have been touting the likes of Joe Mason and Guy Whittingham on loan all summer but we have no money so that ruled that out, I thought Chris Powell might have called on his old mate Malky from his Watford days to do us a favour!

Good luck again you have the stadium, the City and fan base and support to do well this season and if you can regenerate the noise that you did when we played there on the night you won promotion you will scare who ever your playing to death!!

Thank you. Good luck to Charlton this season. A proper club with proper fans. Your dad was a true gent. I wrote to him after he was sacked by the cadman consortium to thank him for the 93 memories. Within a week he responded with a lovely letter. RIP Eddie-gone but never ever forgotten. A true gent.

Paul,

Your old man was true gent, many a Monday and Friday night over many years he'd have a drink with us down the Beverly after we had played 5-a-side and badminton.

Not interested in anyone other than our lives, our kids and our families. Never heard a bad word said about him, brings massive memories flooding back.

All the best for the future.

Hey mate, may god bless, and keep your dad. I loved the picture of Chris Powell with Malky when we got promoted, if you haven't seen it Powell looks happier than Malky. I will pick you up on one thing though, Guy Whitts is managing pompey now so past playing, :) Peter Whitts though... Sorry, I used to do it as well, think it might be an age thing. :ayatollah:

Guy Whit's bloody hell what am I on about? Peter Whittingham I meant!!

Anyway, thanks for the great memories too, that video of the Leeds game really did leave a lump in my throat but it was really good to see it if that makes sense?

The banner, I remember that, it was always my favourite out of the many that were around in those days, I wonder where it ended up?

Do you think you will sell out in every game? I really do want to attend the Newcastle game but I can see it being a sell out. I don't want anybody to think that I am on the cadge because I'm not and the club have done more than we could have ever wished for already for us, they have to draw the line somewhere and rightly so but we would like to attend the game against the Toon and just wondered what the early indications are in terms of completely selling every home game?

Paul
I don't know you but I saw you post after the game we got promotion against your guys and the pictures you posted which for me, and I'm sure for you, were very emotional.
In all the years of following the City (40 yrs this next season) my most fondest memories (after winning promotion to Premier) were when your Dad was in charge. (Scunthorpe and Wrexham that year were mad)
We'd go up and down the country after the away games and end up down the Beverly and I'd always ask him how he got back before us - became a bit of a private joke.
He'd always ask 'how did we do ' - which always made me feel so humble as I'm no manager or expert just love the City but your Dad had the ability to make all comfortable.
More recently I used to see him at Lidls in Barry (where I live) and he always had time to speak and reminisce.
God bless and Good Luck

Some pictures of our day and night, when we got back to the Copthorne my girlfriend and I sat with Neil Kinnock in the bar, just the three of us in there, the Millennium stadium gave us a free tour earlier in the day too!

I bumped into your dad a couple of years ago when Iwas camping in the Gower with my family.

I was washing up at the outdoor cubicles when, Fackinell, it's the great Eddie May washing up next t me. I couldn't have been more surprised if it was the pope!

So down to earth and a top fella. I'll never forget the 93 season. Such happy memories.
